any death metal/black metal with that triggered 'bass drum' sound. oh my god.. it makes me reach for the advil bottle; which when shaken, doesn't sound too far off!

Re: Steve Albini Drum Sound?
14 mics for the drums alone. heh, i find it funny he uses about $9k worth of mics on the toms alone + god knows how much those lomos/altecs or whatever he uses on snares cost when 90% of the sound probably comes from the room and overheads anyway. oh well, it's a great sound.. think i'll go throw o...

Re: Manley vs Massenburg
i've never used a SLAM, but the 8900 was used on my last 'important' recording and it's absolutely amazing in a 'compress the hell out of it without sounding like it' way; specifically, for bass.
i wish i could afford one.

Re: Analog vs. Digital Debate: Over?
i think as far as sound quality, the debate IS over. either format done justice sounds pretty invisible.
but as far as archiving, i think the debate will and needs to be around for years to come.

Re: Selecting a mastering studio.
I haven't contacted mastermind, but when I looked at the website the only rate I could find was like $200/hr. Is that common for mastering, it seemed very high to me? guys like that will always cut you a break if you tell them your situaion (small run, self-financed, etc.). plus mastering doesn't t...

Re: Garageband & the TapeOp ethos
Another fun trick is how when you record a live instrument, it asks what it is, and then applies effects that will make that instrument sound nice. But there's nothing to stop you from lying to GB and telling it you want "crunchy drums" when you're recording direct guitar, or "diva vocals" for that...

Re: Dismemberment Plan
Having read this thread I still haven't got a clue what DP sound like. I've seen the name around a lot, and - cos I'm always in the market for some new US indie thing or other - I need to have some idea where they're coming from. Help! Imagine a poppier Brainiac, with hints of 70's singer/songwrite...

rockers in the new brunswick, jersey area?
hey, I'm moving to New Brunswick in November and besides my gf, I won't know anyone there :( . I'm passively trying to put together a band when I get there and am looking for a keyboardist (to mostly play a bass and sound effects role) and a drummer. I'm a guitarist/singer who's been writing some so...

Re: FS: fmr RNC, cheap 1/4" tape
the 'manual' was a very basic, 3 or 4 sheet printout that basically told you what the knobs do.. no schematics or anything. that's why i didn't bother saving it (i didn't plan on selling it 2 months later either.. heh)
