Keep 'em coming. These are all suggestions I hadn't considered (although i've heard enough good things about the RNP over the years). Here's a super open ended question: what's the big difference between a $400- 800 mic pre and the $1,500 range? does it all come down to transformers and tubes or wha...

That's always my first choice of distortion pedals- sounds better than my Keeley Java Boost or my Sparkle Drive.

Oh yeah, perhaps I should mention that this is for my home studio where I only do overdubs and almost never more than one instrument at a time so i really just need one channel. i keep looking at the UA m-610 (only a few hundred dollars more than i want to spend if I can find one used), but I have t...

suggest a mic pre in the $600 range

As much as i'd love something like the Universal Audio beastie or a Neve portico, I got this here baby on the way and can't really spend that much dough. Right now I've got a Joe Meek British Channel with an EQ and a compressor and i do like it quite a lot. Are there any mic pres in the 5- $600 rang...

to my mind, the downside to Radar is the cost. I've heard nothing but glowing reveiws from everyone who uses the format, but until they come up with something priced for the average consumer, i'm just gonna have to take their word for it. Not to name drop (well, OK, here goes:) but Andy Partridge ra...

Yep, that's the review that convinced me that it was worth getting one. I just haven't found anyone with any experience or opinions on them- which is a little curious. I've also not come across any other reviews anywhere and there's very little info on them anywhere online. Maybe it's just that that...

ADK Vienna/hamburg

Anybody else have any experience with these? I picked up a Vienna super cheap and I've liked what I've heard so far. It does have a bit of that high frequency thing that I associate with cheapo large diapraghm condensors, but it's not harsh- just a bit airy. I have an airy voice anyway and I found t...

I've just done most of an album on the 1/2" version of that (The standard 5050 Mark 3 ) and I'd totally recommend keeping it. The resale value will probbaly lower than the potential for great sounds on your end. I did almost all the music on the 8 tracks and the instruments sound great. The only dra...

A badass bridge is definitely gooing to lower the 50's vibe of your bass, but so does having Sting's autograph at the 12th fret (the only reason I never bought one of those basses). I respect him as a bass player, of course, but I don't want his name on any gear I'm playing. The bridge will give you...

Re: brian wilson singing

I've never been a huge Green day fan, but I was pretty impressed with Billy Joe the other night. That was a really bad version of "Across The Universe" (wonder which clever cheese merchant decided to changed the lyrics at the end), but ona stage full of really good singers, Billy joe was the only on...

seeking keys or pedal steel in Boston

Recently reformed rockers from relatively succesful local band seek 4th person to make different sounds. We have a Fender Rhodes and a dream. Influences: erm, uh, well, anything on Apple Records, Nilsson, The Shins, Elliot Smith, Neil Finn, Neil Young, Neil Jung (off of that very underrated Teenage ...

I say, can anyone recommend a good external drive for these purposes? Nothing too crazy expensive, but one that will do the job?

Re: Help me turn my bassist into Chris Squire

It's kind of a stretech to make a French dude playing a jazz bass with his fingers direct sound anything like Chris Squire- (who is essentially a druid- couldn't be more English if he tried). It's all about a pick and a tube amp. You could re-amp the track through a tube amp (if you can get yer paws...

Re: MBox crashes

Actually, that does help explain things a little. So I'd have the rpogram on my HD2, but actually do most of my work on the external drive? I'm sure there's a topic about this, but any recommendations on a good drive to get?

Thanks for breaking it down like that. The fog has cleared a little.
