Re: Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) a hitmaking pop star?
I find my self slightly confused with this last post. Mr. Oberst, is that you? Never knew you posted here. If that was in fact you, sorry that you had to read that dribble, but you know how it goes. We all run at the mouth when we think nobody listening. On the subject of replacing Elliot Smith as a...

Mixing for Mastering. Where do you leave room?
I have been trying to master and finalize all my own projects lately, with marginal results. Mastering to me is such a strange thing, I do a little multi-band compression, some pass and shelving EQ, and some limiting at the end. But it's hard to get perspective so I've decided to go to a pro. My que...

Re: Tracking to ProTools with a compressor?
I had this conversation just yesterday. There are many comps out there that boast 'Transparancy' at lower Ratios. These are the comps to look for, you don't want to here it working at all in these aplications. I use a DBX 160A and set it to "hard knee" and as mentioned before just compressing about ...

What gear is safe to buy used?
I have always been ebay wary when it comes to spending alot of $ on gear. I bought a 5 channel headphone mixer two months ago, and it looked brand new. Even when I got it, it looked pristine, but it turned out to have two bad jacks. Nothing that I couldn't fix, but it scared me a little. I only spen...

Re: To Many Tracks To Mix!!
They Might Be Giants, Ween, nothing very serious. That's the problem, riding the line between funny and silly. Video game samples for a song about video golf would seem nessesary. But just not this goddamn many. To there credit their great songwriters and have writen very easy to understand lyrics, ...

Re: To Many Tracks To Mix!!
Thanks for the "diplomatic advice" that was what I was looking for. I have made the EQ Spectrum 'one peg a hole' argument. Unfortunatly(and fortunatly) they really do most of there songwriting in there head, and have had very little studio experience. I think I will prepare two mixes, and try to get...

To Many Tracks To Mix!!
I was wondering if anyone has ran into the "Overdub Adict". You know the client, they think that the more tracks you 'track'. the bigger the mix. I am working with a group right now that has been very open to sugjestions, and advice on arangment and amp choice, but they just don't know when to quit ...

Re: 60s shit fuzz
If your on a DAW and have accses to VST Plug Ins. I would recommend IK's "Apmlitube" Amp model. Great Fuzz, great evreything. A bit on the pricey side for one plug, but well worth it. For analog home DIY style(always fun). This will require the sacrafice of an old(or new) Boom Box. First remove the ...

For Vocals and guitars I use a Groove Tubes GT-66. Guitar Center has them for around $500, well worth it.

Re: Renaissance plugins
True the RCL is the gem of the bunch, but there are some other usefull plug's. Rbass is a bit of a mystery to me, i'm not sure how it works exactly. RVox seems a bit simplistic to be very useful, but I like a lot of control over my parameters. RVerb will never be as usefull to me as True Verb. I hav...

I freaked out and couldn't watch it. Not to say that I even started to watch it. I wussed out during the commercials. I saw them in Porland two months ago and, I was afraid it wasn't going to live up. Well at least "Good news" always sounds the same, realy frekin good.

Re: omni, cardioid, figure 8 - explain differences?
Not to discount the advice of others before me. But maybe you should spend some time in your room with headphones and try to find some sweet spots. While knowing mic's, and the polar patterns that comes with them, is very important. Don't forget to let your ears make some of these choices. You might...
