if i were smart enough to build things

i would mod an audio interface to have a limited patchbay between the pre's and the converter. it's kind of lame to have to put everything to "tape" (see what i did) essentially naked. it's not like everything has to go through a gadget, but it'd be nice to be able to put light compression on a snar...

bussing (send) to a laptop?

hi guys! so i use an eight channel interface (ARTube) into my imac, and i have a pc laptop with a vst host and some effects that i really like. i was wondering if bussing (or otherwise sending) out from my interface into the laptop's vst program would work well. if so, what would be the ideal chain?...

overwhelmed by options for live looping

hi e'rbody!! so i'm interested in doing some live vocal loops, and the range of products is pretty intimidating. something like a boss dd-20 would do everything, but it's expensive and has a pretty steep learning curve. something like a regular digital delay pedal is vastly more affordable and acces...

i'm convinced that this is a fairly stupid question . . .

Hi everybody! I understand that VST virtual instruments can be used as plugins for a variety of DAWs and sequencers and whatnot. my question is - can they be used in a standalone fashion? for example, i would like to get a few synths and organ sounds for my laptop, to control with a usb keyboard. i'...

active noise control!

acura is apparently using"active noise control" now to keep the engine quiet. for anyone not familiar with the concept, it's what we experience when we cancel out a sound by flipping the phase on a second track of the same source. pretty cool, thought i'd share.

i'd be lying if i said it wasn't boring, but there comes a point in the evening where boring is perfect. but no, it's definitely occurring in the real world - i've seen it with people (which was a relief after wondering if my ears were playing tricks).

question about TV audio (not sure where this should go) . .

I know this is both a weird question and a longshot, but I'm curious enough to risk online ridicule: so when watching cable television (specifically USA, i believe), i've noticed that the audio does a tiny dip and swell in pitch (about a quarter-step, i think), which is most easily heard during long...

need help with a usb midi keyboard

so the reaper manual says to connect the midi controller to my interface, but the interface (art tubefire) doesn't have a usb in. if i plug the usb midi keyboard into a usb port on my mac, the mac recognizes it, but in reaper, when i go to preferences_> midi devices, it is't showing up and it doesn'...

great article/ thread. the one thing i'd want to add is a pretty obvious caveat for experienced mixers, but something that nearly bit me in the booty when i was first trying it: it's really easy to accidentally muddy up your stereo image using this technique - one example would be sending your oh's ...
