- Topic: Please help with adding a transformer to EHX 12AY7 mic pre

I looked back at the thread with analoghacker, who designed the 12AY7 pre, and there were some different opinions about the best ratio transformer to make sure not to load down a mic too much, but from his description it sounds like there is a fairly obvious spot to wire in the transformer (in place...

What led you to that particular Edcor transformer? The Edcor transformers are actually excellent for the price (this is one of those cases where you shouldn't go by what they cost), but they are not necessarily your best choice for mic level signals since they don't have any magnetic shielding. The ...

Check out Real Guitars, at 15 Lafayette street (it is kind of out of the way down an alley, so park and explore on foot if you don't see it). Also, if you can get up north to Marin county, check out Player's Guitars in San Rafael at 844 B street (on B, between second and third), for a great selectio...

If I were you, I'd probably just order the transformers from Cinemag already in the octal cans, but if you just want to grab one for testing purposes, you can easily buy a plastic octal tube base for a couple of dollars from Antique Electronic Supply (among other places), wire up the transformer lea...

My first real experience with Steely Dan (not counting "Reelin' in the Years," which I didn't know was by them) was at about age 30 when a recording teacher spent a whole lecture of our studio practices class showing a documentary and playing tunes by them, since they were his favorite band and supp...

By the way, I also have a 3M 1" 8 track similar to the one pictured above, a 3M 1/2" 4 track, parts of a custom Ampex 300 1" 8 track, and a few other machines, but all of them need fairly major work other than the MM-1200. I have a BSEE and I'm a pretty skilled electronics tech, so it's not the repa...

If you're mostly concerned about onging tape costs, you might want to shop for a 16 track or 24 track machine and then buy a 1" 8 track headstack. I have an MM-1200 1" 8 track that I got for a really good price, plus my workflow is intentionally old-fashioned, so the 8 track limitation works fine fo...

I've worked on a lot of Silvertone amps with reverb, and none of them (that I've seen) have the oilcan echo. I believe the pipe-bomb looking reverb you're talking about is from the era of the twin 12 combo with the front-facing chrome control panel with red line around it (chassis above speakers wit...

Re:Anybody here knows how to convert combo amps to amp heads
Well, for most of the combo-to-head conversions I've seen, people have actually just sawed off the part of the cabinet that holds the speaker and patched up the tolex covering to look OK (or terrible, depending on how much they cared about cosmetics). It really depends on how the amp chassis mounts ...

RE: Help! Shure 819 Boundary Mic Question
Looking at their schematic, you do need the Shure "power supply" or an approximation thereof. The Shure mini-XLR jack is connected directly to the FET inside the boundary mic, and your 48V phantom power is both a higher voltage than you want and is not appropriately connected to the FET terminals wi...

RE: what can you tell me about AIMS AMPS?
I've worked on a couple of those, but I think the only actual schematic I have is for the PA head, which has reverb but no tremolo. From what I've heard, the "Fender employees moved to Arizona to start the company" thing is accurate, and the amplifiers were made in the USA, but the guitars were impo...
