Topic: How would you mic these drums?

I love the Recorderman setup, especially for lower channel counts. I haven't used 451s before so I'd try those, the 414s, and the C1000s (not a huge fan but maybe...) on overheads and see what I like for the sound. I would not use only a D112 on kick, I would add an SM57 or 421 to it, maybe on the b...

Do you definitely not want a new synth that is 100% analog? A Prophet 08 PE module or two DSI Tetras would give you great, authentic sounds with USB MIDI, remote programmability and reliability. I haven't played with a Prophet 08 PE to see how well it drives around in real time, but for knob-turning...

It certainly seems like "word clock" cables are just overpriced 75 ohm coaxial with BNC connectors. If you want an affordable cable that is labelled "word clock", buy Hosa cables - should be available at Guitar Center and definitely online. Looks like on some forums the big concern is connector qual...

I've used Reaper for three years or so and I pretty much love it. It just does what you want it to do. The included effects are basic, solid, and useful. Definitely worth the money.

You could try to get a win-win with the label and explain that you don't want to sign it without having a lawyer on your side and see if they have any ideas. I should think if you have afforded instruments, strings, sticks, drumheads, tubes, picks, etc. all along so far in the process, then an hour ...

Yeah, I've been playing with order for a while now. Sometimes I want to compressed the EQed sound, other times I want to EQ the compressed sound. If the performance is rocky enough, I might EQ, compress, EQ again, and then limit.

the first crappy drum sounds you get to tape and apply crazy eq to, compared to the first crappy sounds you get to a digital box and apply crazy effect presets to, will induce far less cringes when you listen back a few years down the line. Everyone's different, I guess. I have almost the exact opp...

I can't imagine a firm rule for hat miking (or almost any miking really). Most drummers I've worked with are way too loud on the hat and I'm trying to keep it tame, and I haven't seen many drummers do great things with a hat that I want to make sure is in the mix, so I don't usually mic the hat. For...

My favorite low wattage high-gain combo is the Bogner Shiva. Mesa-Boogie does some decent ones also, although they can come off a little sterile. Soldanos are quality amps, they come off a little fizzy for my tastes but overall very nice. When other people play Marshall amps I really like them. For ...

+1 vote for a Drum Dial. Besides making it much easier to get even tension around the heads, you can note down different tensions and their sounds and experiment while knowing you can always go back to where you had it before (more or less as the head ages, but it's better than nothing).

Oh. I came here to help clarify what asset class musical instruments are for the purposes of fixed asset depreciation for business tax purposes. And to warn about pitfalls of section 179 deductions. Oh well. :-)

I've gotten a natural sound with not too much room by putting an Earthworks omni kinda between the snare and the kick not too far from the drummer's kick knee. Biggest danger is picking up any indigestion the drummer might have.

And then the form factor of this thing.... a huge triangular toblerone? Problem #3. How in god's name is this thing so huge and who in their right mind would even consider that portable in the age of tiny slim phones that you can wear in your skinny jeans. This. When I first saw a link to the artic...

Why not San Francisco or Austin? Washington DC has a great amatuer/prosumer music scene, a thriving economy, and a huge tech sector (if that's your day job), but the weather and people kinda suck. Never been to Portland but Seattle can be kinda weird. Downtown it can get a bit hippy-ish (in both the...
