Some of those Tascams, etc...I never figured out a way to make the EQ correct with the OEM controls. I had to "cheat" with the bias controls.

Sorry, since my world is more on the "pro side" with Ampex, Studer, Otari, etc.

Relatively straight-forward design, although I'm puzzled why they used 4558 opamps for two of the three stages in the state variable filter....odd. A TL072 would have made more sense to me. TI sells a updated version of the TL072, the TLE2072. I wouldn't sweat the 5532 chips too much. Balancing the ...

Crosstalk from one channel to another? IE, the "kick is leaking into the snare chanel" sort of problem?

is the crosstalk full-bandwidth, or just high frequencies?

With only a few pennies/resistor, I vote for the Far-East metal film resistors.

Hiya, Ian...neat bunch of analog "tools" you have at your disposal (per your weblink)! While I'm an "old analog head", I also delve down into the digi-gizmos myself since they are SO pervasive. shrug..old dogs, new tricks Re. cabling: the one thing that I do NOT like about the new "digital" cable is...

Maybe it's a "regional thing" (Louis was located in Houston!), but IMHO, his gear was Above Average for the time, the 1970's. 709 opamps were also used in the front end of Auditronics desks from that era as well. One thing...709's do NOT like to have their outputs shorted when driving any sort of si...

Well, again, the length of the runs *might* swamp-out the effects of cable capacitance if the run is short. IOW, with a short line level (or mic level) run, the total capacitance can be a non-issue. Ideally, 0 pF/foot is the goal! <g>. That's why I'm been gravitating towards the "digital" cables, wi...

Is that spec for running the cable balanced, or with one conductor tied to the shield?

"Mundane" cable such as Gepco 61801EZ (and similar Belden, like 9451) is more in the range of 35/pF per foot. 110 Ohm "digital" cable has a capacitance per-foot around 10 pF.

Thanks for the kind remarks.....I've been sort of "MIA" here recently, with some projects, and for the past two days, no AC Mains here at Camp Chaos due to the ice storms here in Oklahoma. (The latter has put a crimp on what WILL be a fun project: restoration of a relatively rare MCI JH-652 desk wit...

Over time, my girlfriend has done a BUNCH of "production soldering" for me...building up snakes, etc.

VERY early, Debbie learned that "if you drop the soldering iron, do NOT grab for it, since you will likely find the 700-degree end"!

With "reasonable" runs...as in dozens of feet, not thousands...cable capacitance is "the enemy". IMHO, lower picofarads per foot is a good choice.

Hmmm..that kinda rules out "star quad".

Once Upon A Year, the high-dollar heat shrink guns used "in the industry" were the only choice. However, guns sold at Home Depot, etc for "paint removal", etc are a VERY valid choice, and sold at a fraction of the price. I have a beat-to-hell Wagner (sp??) that rattles because of TOO MANY trips arou...

While I still think Jeep Harned was a brilliant businessman, he WAS a cheapskate sometimes.

Hence some terrible parts in MCI machinery.

Wish I'd read this earlier. Just last night I lit my solder sponge on fire by accidentally setting the iron down on it for a couple minutes at 1:30 AM. Lucky there was beer on hand to put it out... "alcohol - the solution to, and cause of, all of life's little problems." LOL!!! Been there...sorta.....
