so when do you compress low end? When I'm mastering somebody's mixes and they haven't got their kick/bass balance sorted out. In which case I'm only compressing the bottom end. It's not the only thing I do, but it's one of the things I do to help out. But to get back to the point: In general a full...

So each mic on it's own sounds awful and the current combination of mics sounds awful. Why do you suspect that when the mics are combined in proper phase it will sound great? It takes about 10 seconds to align a pair of guitar tracks in a DAW. How long will it take you to fix this with the tools you...

If you were to run unbalanced high impedance guitar level signal, you would be likely to introduce noise and loss. You're not going to have interference, you'll have signal loss as Nick points out. You've got to weigh your options Purist: It affects your tone, puts a different resistance (affects im...

In Nuendo/cubase, there is a a panner mode that gives you a separate panner for the left and right sides of the stereo file. This lets you do anything you want with either side of the stereo image. I can't imagine there isn't something in protools that accomplishes the same thing. It might be a pan...

Somewhat related? Maybe this has something to do with your issue? I have had plenty of tracks given to me to mix where there was a stereo recording of a mono sound. Folks were assuming that because their synth has 2 outputs that all the sounds coming out were in stereo. I'd get 20 stereo tracks of m...

I have no complaints about the audio side of things, my critiques and suggestions are for the video side. And please take this all as constructive. I've been down this block and really enjoy doing this kind of stuff. You can track an entire EP in a day and have material to post online which has more...

I remember (back in the day) talk of bias rocks, and that was a function of the record side of things. None of that should affect what's happening to you on playback. Do you have MRLs for all 3 speeds or are you just playing the same one at different speeds? When you play the MRL at 30 ips and the n...

Your approach is totally doable. I didn't realize you were using a standalone digi recorder. Probably a little more complicated to nudge tracks if you aren't using the graphical interface. Are you using the graphical interface?

For a while (Late 90's, Early 00s?) I assisted a lot of engineers strapping a Finalizer across the mix buss 3/4 of the way into a mix, much like they would use the SSL Quad compressor.

It was the Aphex Exciter of the oughts.

Do you want to track through it on the way into your DAW?
You can record while monitoring off the repro head, the time delay between tape hitting the record head and reaching the repro head is a (mostly) fixed time, so you can slide your tracks in your DAW accordingly.

If you're talking about a BSS 901, it is a mono unit. You would need 2 and I am not sure if they can be strapped together for stereo. Also, it's 4 individual tunable bands of compression, so there's no crossovers between bands. It's great for fixing problem sources. Do you have your heart set on sta...
