Re: I'm officially tired of squashed drums and distorted voc
Engineers (both recording and electrical) worked for years and years to get distortion out of the vocals. It's almost painful to hear it back in.

Did circuit design at my day job. Did the mud and sand drywall routine in my vocal booth when I got home.

Re: Snare Micing & Preamp
Mostly I do demos, but here's my $.02: On snare I've used: SM57 - the standard C451B - brighter than the sun C61/CK61-ULS - bright but realistic sounding Audio Technica PRO37R - pretty cheap mic, not as nice as the C61 but similar character. Top end is pretty clean with transformerless mod. Altec Co...

Re: Give a man a fish.
Yes, but ohm's law says otherwise. Unless you bathe regularly in salt water and touch the capacitor while still soaking (like on a marine vessel), it's unlikely to get enough current to cause any sensation, let alone any damage. You shouldn't get a zap but be careful anyways. A power supply fault (e...

Re: mixer for Alesis HD24
I'm using a Tascam DM-24 with the HD24. It works quite well for me. It's a digital board, probably a bit over your budget but it's what I use. The DM24 is equipped with two lightpipe cards so I get 24 tracks in/out. I have the DM24 set for MMC (midi control) and MTC reception for automation and cont...

Re: tascam dm 24
I've been using one for about a year and a half, and for my project/demo studio it works well. Sure, I'd like something better like an 02R96 or maybe a nice analog board, but for the money I thought it was pretty well done. I'm using it with an Alesis HD-24, a pair of DA-88's, PCM91, and a CDRW5000 ...

Re: Mic choice
I've used a few mics on banjo and had good, bad, and different results: Altec 150A/21D 'Coke Bottle'. Subdued top end, nice result on folky banjo played with the standard 3-finger pick arrangement (a lot like the Be Good Tanyas) but a less metallic sound. Good, not for every style. AKG C451B. Damned...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-27-04
Drilled holes and bolted in XLR's, transformers, and attenuators in my new mic preamp. Sowter mic input 1200:4800 -> LT1115, 0-40 dB in 5 dB steps, -> LT1115 0 or 40 dB -> LT1122 -> LT1010 -> Sowter 600:600 I stare lots at the digikey catalog, but I'm an electronics design engineer by day. It took a...

Re: what do you do when your not recording bands to make mon
I design engine control systems as a day job (I'm an electrical/computer design engineer). I also play the odd gig on upright bass and also build mic preamps and microphones for people (and myself). I do recording mostly for friends, and mostly for favours. One group I did a 10-song off-the-floor CD...

Re: Mic review..AKG D112
D112 on upright bass ... yes, all the time. I use the D112 on upright for live applications, I place it somewhere between the treble F-hole and just above the bridge, pointing up, roughly towards the fingerboard. Set low EQ to about -6 on most PA boards and it's a pretty decent sound. Great for rock...
