Re: If you could only have one pair of Mic Pre's....
The API 512 is on my wish-list, and since I haven't put it through the paces like I have the Great River, I can't really do it justice. From what I gather, the API still has that big, solid in your face tone, but has a different character. Maybe slightly less "dark" and a little more open sounding. ...

Re: If you could only have one pair of Mic Pre's....
I love the MP2NV (Great River). Here's what I like about it. It has that big Neve tone, without the EQ. If you're a newbie and you've never had the pleasure to work with a Neve 1073 preamp, what you get is this very full beefy tone that may be slightly darker on top than an super clean transparent p...

Re: DBX 160x/Compression
can you explain what you mean by 'in a series' and/or 'in parallel with the effected signal'? are you saying not to run a guitar through the compressor straight up? should i run it through my board? Series and parallel are just like it sounds. If something is run in series, it means that it becomes...

Re: DBX 160x/Compression
I just saw your other post. I learned the hard way that traditional compression shouldn't be on a send. You want the compression to be in series, or in line with the signal, not an effect added to it. Echo and reverb are effects that can be added to a dry signal and sound right. Compression is like ...

Re: DBX 160x/Compression
where did the first post go? The 160X is a pretty rockin compressor. Having a lot of compressors to choose from, I like it on bass guitar and vocals, but if it's the only compressor you have, it works on anything. To explain compression is sort of beyond the scope of a single post, so maybe someone ...

Re: drum head tuning
Best thing I ever did as an engineer is to hire a pro drum tech for a session. I learned so much by watching what he was doing. I will still hire him for all the important sessions, but for the sessions without the budget for him, I am WAY better at tuning and getting drum sounds in general having w...

Re: Shania Twain
I'll take Pavement over "Christina" any day of the week, no question. Well this is also partially a taste thing. I will take Mercury Rev over Pavement any day of the week too :) But in the slicky major label world of records that the kids in Kansas are going to buy, there is an obvious standard of ...

A Neve style (Great River is my choice) and an API.

Shania Twain
I'm watching her on the Today Show right now. On one hand she sounds like she's lip-syncing because the vocal tone and the band track sounds so produced, but her pitch is so bad that she's definitely singing. Now her pitch isn't THAT bad. It's passable. Fifteen years ago, she'd probably sound great....

Re: Whats the best masterd song?
I don't think I could answer this question. It's easier to spot BAD mastering than it is good. A CD that sounds good may have been mixed so well that the mastering engineer really didn't do much to it. What makes good mastering? To me, the purpose of mastering is to make your mixes sound uniform and...
