I know the sound you mean, what I'm thinking though is that Madlib's musical approach (from interviews I've read) seems to be more about getting it done. A sidechain just seems too scientific for his style (imho) I'd have to dig through some records and listen but I think it is more about a loud kic...

I have an FA-101, the preamps in it aren't bad. I haven't really A/B tested them but they are not noticeably worse than those in an M-Audio MobilePre or Firewire 410. I love ASIO4ALL, I'm getting about 8ms latency in and out with my Dell Inspiron which is not that much worse than my Edirol FA101. Great for when you want to do some work on the move without interfaces.
