Re: mic pre's 100-200 a channel. Looking for 6-8.
I use a True Systems Precision 8 pre that kicks butt. Channels one and two are wired for optional MS Stereo coding, and channels seven and eight can be used as DI inputs as well. It's the best deal going, I think although a unit costs around 2400. That's 300 a channel though, plus the extras...

Re: Exciting Portland Bands?
Buttfrenchers is just so wrong!!! OK so what do I know? Did anybody see the Menomena show at Berbati's last weekend? Who opened for them? Whoever it was they were awesome, three keys, bass, drums and vox. This may be really random but I liked Hotboxed when I saw them battle it out at the Roseland Gr...

I still think that until you get into the spendy realm you can do just as well with a Mackie mixer. A 1604 would only run a few hundred bucks. And then you could take yourself out to dinner later!

Re: Fighting, flattering, failing
A great compromise can be had during a difficult session by helping the artist better understand what engineering entails. I don't mean explaining physics and such. But if I explain what I am doing and why I am making creative choices it often puts them at ease. There's a certain degree of ignorance...

Re: build my studio, part two
I have found that any of those cheaper digital multitracks can do the trick as long as you use a good external mic pre and a good mic. Although this may not involve anything more than getting yourself a Mackie 1202 VLZ mixer and maybe some Shure or Audix mics. Some may laugh, but the Mackie pres won...

Re: Anyone try the new Audix D-6?
I just got one a month ago.
I find it works better than my D12, D112 or Beta52. What I like most is the way it shapes the low mid range for clarity. I can really hear the kick action now!

Re: Training for a Career In Recording
I would try and find the most cost effective solution to getting a technical degree. Most importantly, if I were starting over I would concentrate more heavily on getting out and meeting those in your area who are willing to hang out and talk about this stuff. Meet engineers, musicians and most espe...

I just posted that same black hole article on the top page. Hey Shawn!! Things are alright. I have three clients at the same time! I'm working on a pretty creative web drama that will be posted in the months ahead by a Portland couple. I've got a blues-rock band from Eugene off and on. And I've got ...
