i used to think that rick basses always had that "low note on a piano" sound but he managed to do fine with it in a reggae band. That's exactly the sound that Rick basses tend to lean toward naturally, but there is a broad range of tone you can get out of them. I've got a mid-70s 3001. Its only got...

Re: what % of new music do you think is done on tape?

I was talking with someone the other day and they saying analog is dead. I was saying "I bet most great albums made today are still either tracked to tape or mixed down to tape". I really have no proof of this it's really just opinion, and what I've read in interviews and such. This guy is an instru...

It sounded like a fun band /song to record. I like it. I would have liked to hear the vocals a little more up front (less effects) in the mix. If you have time you should check out the band Decemberist (amazon.com to hear samples). Listen to thier approach on mixing the vocals and how they fit in a...

My first outside production/indie pop-rockish

Hey guys/gals. Like a proud poppa, its my first production/engineering/mixing gig that wasn't a band I'm in (although I did play lead guitar, organ and a bunch of other stuff on it). And if anyone is in Madison WI tonight (2-3-06) with nothing to do, come to the King Club on King St, there's a CD re...

Two pages of creepy music and Jandek has yet to be brought up? I've only heard a couple of songs once or twice, they stick out as the creepiest things I've ever heard, and that was before I was aware of his legend.

didn't paul play the drums on "love me do?" i dont think ringo was in the band at the time of the recording and pete best had just been fired......i think? I think that was a session guy, Alan White(?). Put me in the "Pepper is overhyped" camp. Its still a good record, but I don't think its as good...

so, any ideas on what these are worth in good condition? Local amp tech charges $65 an hour + parts. How dangerous would it be for me to pop the lid on it myself? It's a solid state amp... Its tough to say the value of those amps.....not much on the collector market. But I've found it to be a good-...

I've got two different amps from the Gibson G-series. Both of them had a problem with the input jack having a loose connection and making noise like you described., check that first. I'd say its worth getting checked out. The smaller of the two I have, the G-40 (40 watt), is a really cool amp. They ...

I'm a bit torn on the Behringer thing. I have an old Behringer mixer that got me through a few years of tracking to a Tascam 238. The thing barely works anymore, random stuff just started quitting on it. And now I'm working with an MX5050 and an Allen & Heath board, so I figure "I'm past that". But ...

I love "I Love It Loud". Glad somebody brought that up here. I always suspected it was mainly a lot of room mic(s) in the mix. If memory serves, the guitars and bass in that song are very quiet in the mix for a rock/metal song. I think that makes a big difference as that frees up a lot of room for t...

I've got a 664 on my shelf. It needs a connector. How would I disconnect the on/off switch and wire it directly to an XLR?
This is the pin connector layout:

I've got that special on VHS, great stuff.

Orbison was one of the finest singers ever. Led one hell of a tragic life too.
