I record a lot of jazz and therefore the drummers rarely have a hole cut in the kick drum head...so I rarely use an inside mic. An outside mic that I love is the AKG C4000B - it seems to get a great low end with a good snap with a ton of bloom. I also use an SM7b quite a bit for kick. My favorite ja...

I also have a C3000 that doesn't get much love. I'm the only person on here who ever sings the praises of the C4000B. Sometimes I think I'm the only person alive who even uses it. I don't really like the Blue Babybottle. There, I said it. I have to say - I do like the C4000B - not on everything, bu...

Yeah - as you're discovering, the low end that you don't hear on your system can build up pretty significantly and cause the comp to kick in and squash them. Not only that, but those extreme low frequencies produce more energy than than the higher frequencies...robbing you of headroom. As backwards ...

So many possibilities with side chains. [1] compress the guitars from the vocal track to get the guitars to jump out between verses and phrases. [2] along the same idea - compress BG VOX from the lead VOX to keep them all feeling very cohesive and like they're following each other dynamically. [3] t...

It really happened because of the limits of the technology. Keep in mind that those old desks had a pan switch with 3 positions: center, left or right. So you only had those options for panning a track. It wasn't so much a deliberate decision to avoid those "in between" settings...they simply weren'...

If you have room, try a trick from Thad Jones/Mel Lewis where they would put every section in a circle,(sax, trpts, bones & rhythm), a put an omni in the middle of each circle. The idea was to saturate each mic to keep sound from the other sections from bleeding in. It worked quite well back in the ...

I find omnis can be useful in less than desirable rooms, since there is less build-up of off axis coloration. Of course, if the room is too small to get the mics away from the walls or ceiling, you can also have comb-filtering issues. Get there early if possible -- classical musicians frequently re...

according to PrePal (http://prepal.com/data/JoeMeek.htm) the going rate is about $341 these days.
If I didn't already have 2 of them (and a VC2) I would be interested...but alas...I'm good on the Meeks.
Good luck, though.

If the room is small you are going to want to minimize it's affect on the recording. That being said: omnis are out of the question. I would also avoid M/S, as the S will likely pick up side wall reflections more so than ambience. Though, to back Chris up - I've heard some gorgeous classical recordi...

I can't speak for how they setup for that session - but I do know that my best jazz kit recordings come from a 3 mic setup. 2 overheads (DPA 4021s) set to either side of the kit aiming in towards the snare and a LDC about 4ft high a few feet in front of the kit (I actually prefer the AKG C4000B for ...

So many cool options with a trio...but the trick is to make it work for the music. I'm a big fan of panning the bass and guitar opposite each other...but that doesn't work if the bass line is too static. It works very well with bass players who really push the band & keep the energy up with melodic ...

I use a program called 'Billings', but it's for Mac OS X only. It's geared for creative business owners (musicians, designers, web developers) who have a lot of info to keep track of and multiple ways of billing (by the hour, flat fee for project, taxable, non-tax, retainers, mileage fees, et al). I...
