Re: John Mayer - WTF!?

I believe he's a Berklee grad. I can't stand his music, but I've heard more than one person I respect say he can definitely play guitar. He just taped an Austin City Limits the other night, and managed to coax Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon into being his rhythm section, so there may be something to...

Re: RIP Warren Zevon

i wonder if he had been ill for a long time
FYI, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer almost exactly one year ago. Given that his doctors seemed to think he'd only make it a few months, he did pretty well . . . and wrote and released a beautiful album, too.

Re: live to 2 track

My question is - what do you look for in a 2 track machine? Why not start out tracking live to 2 tracks on whatever multitrack you're using? You don't have to use all those channels, you know! :D I'll say this much . . . it may seem counterintuitive, but the process of multitracking with a lot of o...

Re: Hello . . .

Actually, the boys in Fastball just finished up a 3-week stint in my studio. They were mostly writing and demoing what they wrote. They actually have their own PT rig on a laptop, and so they demo to that. I mainly supplied the space for them to get away from distractions. Great band. I'll check wit...

Re: Hello . . .

Mr. McQ, I wouldn't know "big time" if it kicked me in the groin. (Wait, it already did. Or was THAT the economy?}

You still in the same place? Hope you're doing great . . .

Re: Preamps and Mixers : Is everything I think I know wrong?

Unless you just can't stand having to physically patch your mic pres into whatever tape inputs you want them to go to, I think you're doing it the right way. Why use an outboard preamp and then run the signal through the board? To add noise & distortion? I don't know that console well enough to know...

Re: Hello . . .

We spent 4 hours last night coming up with a piano part on one song that was

a) interesting
b) easy enough for me to play

Used a pair of KM184s into an original Great River on my 1962 Yamaha U1, and really didn't have to monkey with mic positions too much. Sounds nice.

Re: Hello . . .

Hey, good to hear of another MX user in Austin. Belly-dancing, huh? Sounds exotic! I like the Carousel Lounge, I'll definitely have to check it out.

Several of us "locals", along with one Brit, got together at Curra's during SXSW. A semi-regular get-together sounds great. Anybody else in?

Re: Hello . . .

No samples I'd feel good about releasing as of yet. Lead vocals are just about done, but we still have all of the female backing vocals to track, along with the random noisemaker or three. Just about everything else is done. I've got a couple of edits to make as well, but I'm pretty much gonna stick...

Hello . . .

I just found out about the TapeOp forums. I'm not sure what my excuse is for not having done so earlier. Perhaps it's these infernal allergies, or the economy. I'll go with the allergies. I'm sure I've run into many of you over the years at either r.a.p., prosoundweb, or (God forbid) real life. I ow...
