Re: How Does One Sync an Analog Tape Multitrack to a DAW?
I am in a similar situation. I just picked up a Teac 80-8 1/2" 8-track, and I'd like to use it in conjunction with my DAW (currently an Aardvark Q10, but hopefully switching soon to a MOTU 828mk2). Specifically, I'd like to track using the tape machine (sacrificing one track to SMPTE) and analog ins...

Re: Realistic Moog MG-1 question?
Why don't you try building your own analog synth? It's cheap, easy, and you get to learn something new. Paia Electronics makes some great kits with idiot-proof manuals. The Fat Man is less than $200, and for $450 you can build a fully modular system. All you need are some basic tools and a soldering...

Re: Discrete mixer/console?
Most of the ICs in a console are op-amps, which are rather complex configurations of transitors, resistors, diodes, and other simple components packaged into a convenient "black box." In a discrete circuit, the gory details of the amplifiers are exposed directly on the circuit-board. (For an example...

Recovering un-finalized CD-R
My friend recently recorded my band into a standalone Sony CD recorder at a live gig. But he screwed up and powered off the recorder before finalizing the CD. I've made this mistake before and was able to just turn it back on and finalize the CD. But with this disc the recorder says the recorded CD ...

Re: A night with The Walkmen, Earlimart, and recording talk
How could they afford to build their own studio in Manhattan and stock it with vintage gear? It's my understanding that they're all young guys, and I they can't make that much gigging? Are they like independently weathly?

Thanks for the advice. How about for recording? Anyone done any recording on either of these boards?

Soundcraft Spirit LX7 - any good?
I work for a small live sound company, and my boss is letting me pick out a new board for small-club-sized gigs. We need AT LEAST 16 inputs, but 24 would be nice, as well as flexible routing for monitor mixes. The board will essentially be mine, and my secret motive is to use it for recording as wel...

Re: TIme Code? Stripeing? Midi to time code? WHAT?
You can use a device like the JL-Cooper PPS-2 to print SMPTE timecode to one track of your tape machine. This timecode can be recorded just like audio, but don't try to listen to it--it's a clock pulse that other devices can follow. If you patch the recorded SMPTE code back though the pps2, it can g...

Re: Yo La Tengo vs. Sun Ra Arkestra
I just saw YLT and the Aislers Set in Burlington and was equally blown away with Ira's guitar playing. They played on a small stage, and Ira actually had a guitar tech up there on stage with him the whole show. This dude would tune-up and re-adjust all the guitars after Ira fucked them up. Appartent...

Re: Fixing Old Monitors... Worth it?
Thanks very much for the helpful advice. How will I pick the correct replacement tweeter and midrange speaker elements? Other than matching the dimensions and impedences, are there any other factors I must consider when replacing them? Alternatively, how does one go about having a speaker reconed? S...

Fixing Old Monitors... Worth it?
I recently acquired some old EV "encore series" monitors from a radio station. They're three-way monitors, but upon hooking them up I discovered that only the woofers work--no sound at all from the two other speakers, which are also obviously physically blown. (I suspect a crossover, since they're n...

Re: Aardvark pro q10...I think I f'd something up here.
I'd recommend totally removing all the Q10's drivers and reinstalling--it's a messy installation. Aardvark gives some very usefull advice on uninstalling on their website. And definitenly don't let your machine sleep. I'm surprised it's able to go to sleep at all--on my sytem the Q10's driver's make...
