Re: SM57's as overheads

If lo-fi is what you're after then I'd suggest using a matched pair of bank teller drive-up window microphones as overheads, a telephone receiver on your kick, wrap a pair of headphones around your snare so the left ear is on the top and the right on the bottom--flip the phase on the right ear. And ...

Re: SM57's as overheads

Ew. They're awful as overheads. Of course it all depends on what sound you want, but I think that the purpose of overheads is to snap a good overall picture of the entire kit. An SM57, being a cardiod dynamic, has a freq. response too limited and focused to get a nice balanced picture. Blu, I heard ...

i listened to the silophone and it sounds alright but it could use some more low end and maybe cut around 3-4kHz.

Re: Mic review: STAPES OMNI condenser!! .................Duh

ion, it sounds great on the guitar. Also, those shures sound good on the vocals, particularly on 'jonah'.

Anybody have any audio clips where they've used the stapes on acoustic piano or as overheads?

Re: making a keyboard piano sound more like a real piano

this might sound like more work than its worth but you could try placing the speaker that your mic'ing inside some sort of large open (or maybe closed) wooden box/crate. This way the frequencies bounce around in the box and 'cloud up' like they do in a normal piano and you might be able to sort of s...

Re: making a keyboard piano sound more like a real piano

Edirol Orchestra is the closest piano sound I've gotten. Of course, nothing will ever compare to a real one. Edirol has strings, horns, keys, percussion. All from samples. The string sounds are percussion are pretty fun and usable to some extent.

Re: Another Green World/Low Drum Machine Question...

To my ears the sounds available on the cr-78 and the ones heard on sly and graham central are the same sounds. It is equally strange, then, that in 1978 they would release a drum machine with sounds that would've resembled 7 year old technology. Unfortunately, there is very little information about ...

Re: Another Green World/Low Drum Machine Question...

the CR-78 was used by Sly in 1971 on 'theres a riot goin on' and kraftwerk. Also by Graham Central Station in 1973 (and probably a few others!) So yeah, maybe it wasn't available to consumer at the time but only a few folks with connections? i dunno.

can't be true. no amount of sm57s will allow you to get a piano to sound like the one on 'moondance'.

Sixtoo-

If you're just looking for that NYC hip-hop sound then all you need to do is chop up 'God Made Me Funky' and put piano notes on top. What do you need all those mics for?

Re: "voted" the one and only mic to have on an isl

it is known as the "broadcaster's mic" so maybe they were thinking more along survival terms when they named it 'only mic to have on an island'. Perhaps you could broadcast your location over the airwaves and some plane flying ahead would hear it and rescuse you. Just a thought.

Re: upright piano recording?

I don't know a whole lot about some of the mics you own but I can recount my own experiences. The only luck I've had on upright piano is with a pair of small diaphragm condensers. 2 SM57s or 58s will sound absolutely horrid. Also a Rode NT1000 and a combination of anything else won't sound good eith...

Re: Who has brainwashed us?

how about, for starters, the Geoff Emerick interview in Mix magazine where he says that the solid state board that Abbey Road got just never compared to the tube console. Also, when you listen to records from the 60s some people may note a magical 'warmth' or 'life' or whatever to the recordings. A ...
