How are the tubes? If you are 100% positive the tubes are good then I'd contact Mesa.

On my Jazz bass if you turn one of the volume pots down just a tiny bit it buzzes like a single coil.

Phoenix Gold car audio (the company I work for) used to make a similar motor-driven subwoofer called the Cyclone:

I don't have the ART or the 6176 but I do have the RNP/RNC and they are all about being clean and transparent. From what I've read about the 6176 is its more of a 'color' pre/comp. Wasn't it the guy in the Shins who had a UA pre and was raving about it? From the bands you list I'd say the 6176 is mo...

OK, I replaced one of the IC's today and did a shootout stock vs. SSM2019:

Ch 1
Ch 2

Not gonna say which channel is which IC but I can hear a big difference here at home. I used 2 Oktava MK012's w/ Dorsey mod side by side and set the 001 clock to internal. I'd say it was definately worthwhile.

Soldering each leg individually. It helps to have one of those magnifying glass/lights to see what you are doing. You have to be very careful of course but I'm an audio tech and have replaced probably 50+ IC's this way.

Got my IC's the other day too. The plan is to install one sometime later this week, do a quick shootout stock vs. mod, post the sound clips, then install the other IC. To remove the stock IC's I'll use a small heat gun with a tip that looks like a metal straw. Heat up one side of the IC until the so...

Totally up to you of course, but I'd feel safer not using a switch and manually hooking up your setup for each application. Like Sco said, if the Mesa is on it will need a speaker load at all times. btw- I'm drooling over the Stiletto. I have a Rectoverb combo and love that thing to pieces. I'll get...

I agree with trying a thicker pick. I have a D18 and learned over the years it likes brand new strings, a heavy pick, and strumming chords lightly. If you hit the strings too hard (even what I would consider moderate) the sound will distort.

I've built a similar 9V power supply. I used a wall wart power supply to get in the ballpark voltage-wise (12V I believe) and an LM317 to get from 12V to 9V. You need to build a little circuit around the LM317 but its real simple and the data sheet explains what values you need.

Honestly I really dont think that the mic pres in the 001 are that bad...HOWEVER they sound like total donkey shit because of those 001 converters and I dont believe you can bypass those bad boys...I've run my apogee pres (analog) into the 001 coverters and it dulled down the pres so much it sounde...

Improving Digi001 mic pre's

So I popped open my Digi001 today and found that the mic pre's (channel 1 and 2) use Analog Devices SSM2017 self-contained audio preamp IC's. They are the wide 16 pin surfacemount package. Snooping around the net I found, mostly thanks to Jim Williams from Audio Upgrades that there are a couple of d...

The clips on the Oktava MK012's are OK but the threads on a couple of mine are stripped. And I'm really careful screwing them on.
