Cool, thanks for the quick reply. I'll have to look into those suggestions. So is noise reduction more than just compression? I should have stated more clearly, I guess, but I never use compression, so it is new territory for me. Do you think getting something like the Dolby 166 or FMR RNC would be ...

Tascam 388 noise reduction

I have used the 388 for a long time with the noise reduction off and prefer it this way with most applications. However, I recently tried using it for vocals and was surprised how much it helped. It removed the sort of nasal honk and airy aspects that I never could get rid of using EQ, mic choice/pl...

tension arm adjustment

I know this thread has been kind of dormant, but I was wondering if anyone could help with tension arm adjustments. Based on posts earlier in this thread I was able to get the tension arms into position in play mode, but I'm not sure what to do about FF and RR. Is there a way to do this without a te...

I think the 1567 is tube driven while the 1607 is not. I'm planning on using the 1607 with multiple mics on a single source to track to an 8 track recorder. The previous owner actually installed a 1/4" jack against a plate on the back of the unit that connects to the speaker out, which makes hooking...

Bring back an old thread here, but figured it was better than starting a new one. I was just wondering if anyone else had any opinions on the 1607a? Are they pretty quiet pres? I was also wondering what would be the best route to hook it up to a mixer? All of these older Altecs seemed to have the sa...

So, it looks like I might have the opportunity to pick up an Altec 1607a. From the limited information I've been able to find about these, it seems like they are are high gain units. Would it be useful as a ribbon mic pre? Does anyone have any experience with one?

No problem, man, I kind of switched gears there. I'll have to look into the True pre also. I havent' even come across that while searching things out here and elsewhere. Looks like a good choice, if not a little out of my price range at the moment. With regards to the Sytek, is it pretty versatile, ...

Oh man, it looks like a highjacked my own post! Thanks for all the info so far. What I'm really looking for now is a decent pre for a ribbon mic. I'm using a fethead with the re20 and I'm getting positive results, but at the moment my ribbon mic is basically useless because there is just too much no...

I know I started this thread a while ago, but I'm going to pick it back up. So I ended using a fethead with the re20 and a phantom power box directly into the 388 and it worked great. Recently I picked up a used Shinybox ribbon mic, and now the whole mic pre issue is front and center. I use the feth...

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a way to repair a bent motor. When i run my 388 the right motor spins on axis, but the left one is visibly off. I guess the motor itself isn't bent, but something if off on the left side. I think the previous owner ran any sort of 1/4" tape with it (...

Ampeg Gemini 1 speaker

I'm looking to put a new speaker in my Gemini 1 and I was wondering if anybody had any experience here. I would be replacing the original Jensen and I'm hoping to find something that sounds as close as possible to it. I'm eyeing the Weber 12F125 since that seems to be their matchup speaker and I've ...

While I'm posting, maybe it would be a good time to ask about a decent pre to use with the re20, and possibly other mics in the future, maybe a ribbon eventually. I'll probably be looking at spending at most $500 for one or two channels. I would like to avoid some of the lower cost tube pres, though...

Perfect, thanks. I'm still getting acquainted with the machine, and didn't want to waste money on a mic i might not be able to use right away.

388 mic pre

Hello all,

Quick question. I'm looking to get an ev re20 to record vocals with on a tascam 388. The vocals will be on the quiter side. Are the pres on the 388 enough to get a decent sound? I'm looking at getting a decent pre eventually but it's not in the budget at the moment.

Thanks.

phantom power question

Hello all, A few years ago a friend sold me a custom made phantom power box that has two inputs, each with a switch for phantom power, pad and phase. I bought it mainly so I could power an AT 4033 mic that I had recently purchased. I'm still learning the basics of recording and I was wondering if an...
