Re: TapeOpCon gets closer...

I'm already registered, is there a way one can enter the contest anyhow?

Re: mixing hardcore/horror punk

Getting it at the source is the best way to go with clicky bass tones. I understand that it's too late for these takes... Rememeber that compression/limiting that has too slow of an attack will actually make the problem worse! Try a Waves C1 with look-ahead kicked in to get a "zero-attack time" limi...

Re: mixing hardcore/horror punk

When mixing it, just attempt to make it the punchiest, clearest mix like you always would, right? Don't declare to the band "I'm gonna clean you guys up when I mix" - just do your best when you do it. Telling them you're going to deliberately going to "change their sound" will likely result in a cho...

Re: "going for it"

I agree with all of the above, and want to add that if you enter into a partnership/LLC type of thing with friends to make sure everything is on paper and signed between you all. Hire a lawyer and an accountant. I kid you not. Nothing destroys friendships like business. Don't cheat the tax-man, eith...

Re: digital to analog 2-track transfer: waste of time?

I also love going to tape for mix when multi-tracking digital. Sure does add a polish and glisten to the whole thing. I'd be wary of going out at 24 bit to tape, then A/D back at 16 to avoid the math of "losing" the lower 8 bits! I recommend in every case to use the highest bit depth A/D possible, t...

Re: Variable power to effects?

Radio Shack has a switchable AC to CD adapter. While it's not continuously variable, there are several settings below the usual 9V (3V, 4.5V & 6V). Just don't go above 9V as you could cook your pedals (although I don't think 12V would fry every pedal out there, I wouldn't take the chance... ) Catalo...

SO cool! And there sure is plenty to be archived at the LOC.

(As a side note, I've always wanted a laser-pickup turntable, but I suppose not until I hit the lottery...Heh.)

Re: Removing mouth noises from a vocal track

Waves X-Click could possibly get rid of tongue clicks and such.
Manually, you could go through and Pencil-tool the clicks out.

I'm assuming they're clicks, as that's the most likely sound I'd suspect - more info please?

Remember a good preemptive strike against mouth noises is good hydration!

Re: opinions on mxl 990...

I've only had the opportunity to use a pair of them on a Steinway, actually. Considering the guy I was working for was using them through an MAudio Audio Buddy pre into a Roland VS840 to record solo piano, I'd say they're pretty fantastic for the money. For the money, I say. At $70 why not just grab...

Re: "Dear God" vs. "Mermaid Smiles"

I, too, had the original vinyl, and spent ages tracking down the CD without Dear God on it, 'cause, as it is now my vote, I think Marmaid Smiles makes the flow much, much smoother on side two. Just my 'shave-and-a-haircut' though - we're all entited to the opinion that the version we're most familia...

Re: anyone know anything about superlux(NOT sound delux!) mi

I bought a pair of the Superlux SMK-H8K for a rediculously low price on eBay. Figured "hey - why not?" They could be pretty useful, although I don't use 'em that much. I like my Oktava 012's better for similar flavors (and covet my friend's matched KM184 pair...) The biggest drawback I've discovered...

Re: double mics on podiums - a la bush press conference - ho

Well, each mic was balanced, so you have that traditional noise canceling. But then they'd put the two mics pretty close together, and put them out of phase, so that stage "noise" (drums, guitars, monitor wash) got cancelled out. Since this is a differential system, the singer has to sing right up ...
