Need tips on recording a truly gargantuan drum kit!
Later this week, I'm beginning work on an album project with a really killer prog-rock band. I love the music, but I'm really not digging the thought of miking up the drummer's MASSIVE drum kit! (the biggest I've recorded to date was a 7-pc w/ a single kick...) I've convinced the guy to 'downsize' h...

Post subject: Re: Recording using a POD 2.0 as preamp
Like I said, I can nail MY tone with the Pod XT Pro with way less hassle than miking up my triple rec or plexi. I've actually done extensive comparisons between my amps, cabs, & mics vs. the modeled versions and was quite surprised to find that they were SHOCKINGLY close. By the time they were in a ...

Anyone heard Steven Wilson's "Insurgentes" album? It's a beautiful piece of work I'm sure a lot of you might appreciate. Great sonic textures... my fav '09 album for sure!

Re: Recording using a POD 2.0 as preamp
It's funny... these days, I actually prefer to use a Pod (XT Pro, to be specific) over miking my tube rig. I've fooled many tone purists and tube snobs over the last couple of years that way! :) It's much quicker for me to get MY tone, without having to deal with the humidity making my cabs sound di...

re: Recording using a POD 2.0 as preamp
The easiest bet is to hook the Pod up directly to your Mac's line in... I do this a lot for laying down scratch tracks on the road and it works really well. I'll either use the built-in speakers on the Mac or a pair of phones/earbuds plugged into the Mac to monitor things. (This is especially import...

For the Mac, there's a great program called "Macs Cue" that I use to trigger clips in between my band's tunes when performing live. It sounds like this may just be exactly the thing you're looking for. It's very simple and easy to use, and CHEAP!!! here's the link: http://www.clgizmos.com/macscue/ A...

re: monitoring w/o software monitoring.
Let me see if I've got this straight... You want to monitor your live inputs and your Logic tracks through the Motu, right? I generally do the same thing without using software monitoring and use hardware-direct monitoring from my interface for the live inputs. For the playback tracks, I generally c...

Yes, I've also used 2 DI boxes the way described in the above post for this same thing, and it DOES work. (You need a female to female XLR connection for it to work.) The tone is OK, but somewhat brighter and a bit thinner than what a normal length guitar cable sounds like, probably 'cause the outpu...

re: weird logic glitches.
I've noticed these weird track interactions before in other projects before, now that I think of it. Mine always seems to sound like a damaged speaker hitting the bottom of the basket really hard, even though my monitors are at too low a level for something like that to happen. (Not to mention I'd p...

Digital wireless!
We keep an X2 XDR95 digital wireless system in our studio just for this purpose! It sounds really good (like a short guitar cable) and doesn't have all the hiss/noise/compander problems of the typical analog wireless. Even our finicky clients seem to like it...

Recently I was mixing a song in Logic and had a similar thing happen. My mix had a few dozen tracks, but the combination of 2 overdriven guitar tracks and 1 electric bass track was causing a subsonic buildup at a repeatable point in my song. I stuck a high-pass filter on all the tracks in question a...

Fat kick drum sound
I'm a long-time reader but new poster, for the record (pardon the pun!) My favorite miking technique for getting a big, fat, natural, yet articulate kick sound is as follows: Start with a good-sounding, well-tuned kick drum, of course! Make sure there's a hole in the front head, too. I start with th...

RE: new white macbook firewire
For what it's worth, I own the new (Jan 09) white macbook and have used it with MANY firewire interfaces and have not had a single glitch yet. (I've used the Alesis IO26, M-Audio Profire 2626, Presonus Firepod, and the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 mostly, but I have yet to try it under bootcamp, though....
