Choosing an audio interface for laptop recording
I have an older (G3/500 mhz) iBook. looking for an audio interface for $300 or less. I'll be working with Cubase or ProTools and Reason (or something else) and an external firewire drive. I need: good sound quality built-in preamps 2 simultaneous channels 16/44.1 extra points for: 4 simultaneous cha...

Re: RCA 77DX ribbon mic
I just tried it out for the first time.
The first thing i noticed is: yes, the gain is very low. I'll have to use my crummy ART tube preamp. haha.
The second thing I noticed is: yes the rolloff is kinda intense.

RCA 77DX ribbon mic
Our college radio station has one from back in the day. Alas, it has sat in a closet unused for the last 15 years.
I'm going to try using it for some tracking of live in-studio performances this spring.
Anyone used one before? What are some good applications?

Re: recording guitar and vox at the same time
i've had the best luck using one microphone to capture the whole performance. it only works in some applications, and placement is important to get the relative levels right. i push the bass EQ up just a bit and it sounds great. If you don't mind a little bit of room tone.

Re: Small, incredible sounding records
"Everyday examples of humans staring straight into the blow" by Get The Hell Out of the Way of the Volcano is very simple and sparsely arranged, but somehow it remains one of the most subtly powerful recordings i've heard. the cassette is out of print, though, and i think the CDR reissue may be as w...

What do Ian McKaye and Toby Keith agree about?
They agree that more media deregulation is a really shitty idea. http://www.futureofmusic.org/news/FCCmusicianletter.cfm

Re: Any PTHD Pluggo Users out there?
i have the older version of pluggo (without the softsynths) and i absolutely love it. i don't just use it for "experimental stuff" but for more subtle kinds of textures, phasing and stuff. definitely worth the purchase.

Re: Grandaddy's new album "sumday"
i totally disagree...i think this album is obviously their best work. i think that they actually have alot of input with how their music sounds, so if it's more produced and compressed then maybe that's what they wanted with this album. i really don't think it sounds supercompressed (like all the C...

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.
as regards the Microphones/Phil Elvrum: "The Glow Pt. 2" is my favorite thing he's done, but the new one "Mt. Eerie" is bigger sounding. One thing that i've learned from listening to his work is that you can be most effective at creating "big" sounds by also including "small" sounds to provide contr...

Grandaddy's new album "sumday"
I am really upset about this. The songwriting is so strong, some of Jason's best melodies ever, but the dumb guy they got to mix it (who also mixed Coldplay and Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan and shit)sucked so much of the "weird" out of it. Everything sounds so fucking overcompressed, it makes me rea...
