Re: WHAT IS CLASS "A" mean in a mic pre
After reading that Rane website description (highly recommended) and the rest of these messages, I am definitely no longer a virgin. My output stage is now off but my input stage is open. I fucked myself. I am class B. Seriously, I'm at least now starting to get this. Helpful for future gear choices...

Re: WHAT IS CLASS "A" mean in a mic pre
I'm glad someone broke the cherry on this one as I've been in the closet about my ignorance on the issue as well. But I feel it's thus far been only half-answered. I now know what "discreet" means, and I found out what an "IC" is. So, what about the original question: WHAT IS CLASS A??? Same as the ...

Re: Good analog 8 track recorders ?
For my 2 cents I own an Otari MX5050 1/2" 8-track and it is badass. Had it for a few months now and it's got surprisingly high fidelity sound, plus that tape warmth and saturation of course. Got mine from a kind TapeOpper in NYC who sold it to me dirt-cheap ($375 plus $100 shipping) with the caveat ...

Re: TapeOpCon- who's going and who's been?
I am going this year for the first time, both because it'll be a really good chance to learn a lot and meet some great people (hope to meet some of those posters I've been chatting with) and also because I went to a conference in New Orleans last year for Graphic Designers (my day job) and that town...

Re: What decent mics does Radio Shack have today?
They make a large-diaphragm multipattern tube condenser mic that's out of this world. Just kidding. Actually I noticed when I was in there a few months ago that they had these Sure SM57-type copies, which had about the same frequency response/curve, the same shape, and were being touted as drum/elec...

Re: Demagnetizing heads
Yes on both those last two messages...plug in the demagger away from the machine and don't have your machine on! I can't believe I forgot that! A lot of really knowledgeable people on this board have been helping me along as I learn, and I really appreciate it. It is an amazing resource like no othe...

Re: Demagnetizing heads
Seriously, new heads for older 8-track machines definitely start at several hundred dollars. A little more info on "not touching" : The thing is that demaggers will actually get to a point of nearness to the head and then suck you in, as it's basically a big electromagnet. If you clunk that tip agai...

Re: Guitar sounds - different mics and placements
Gotta go back to that Terry Date rave. Let's also not forget: 1.) On that first White Zombie record those rockin' guitar tones were accomplished with a fucking ProCo Rat stomp box of all things. 2.) I think Pantera was briefly mentioned...that needs to be said again as it's possibly the finest crunc...

Re: PIN 2 Hot???
which happened from time to time until the AES Standards Committee formalized the Pin 2 = Hot arrangement Hey, that's interesting...when exactly did that happen if you know? My 80's-era Otari MX5050 is pin 3 hot, and since I figured out that dilemma in an analog beginner's nightmare sequence I've b...

Re: Clear Balanced sounding drums. What the????!!!
Hey man, I'm in your shoes, too. I've been recording for a long time but only live kits for a couple years now. I've been working damn hard at this same dilemma for about two months now. Indeed enginers spend their whole LIVES working the drum sound out, but I mean I've been ACTIVELY doing experimen...

Re: PIN 2 Hot???
Ummm, I'm probably talkin' out my ass and I don't want to lead someone away from the right answer, but: I've heard that often it's the Japanese gear that has the "wrong" hot pin. Mogami sounds Japanese to me. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Hey..that RHYMES! Maybe we should come up with some haikus....

Re: Banjo Recording?
I've recorded a tenor banjo and a bluegraa banjo. Tenor is definitely soft and muted sounding, if anything you have to be a bit aggressive with the mic, but bluegrass is a different animal... In regards to the bluegrass type, which is MUCH brighter, I'm going to agree/expand with what's been said th...
