DIY audio-triggered switch

Hi, all! I want to build a line-level trigger that can perform simple momentary switch operation. audio out-->trigger level reached---> contact is made, triggering asso. devices. An example: My Oberheim DMX drum machine has individual outs for each voice. It's great to run it through the filter on m...

mic stand holder

How about a large rectangular box against the wall? You could run a slotted 1*10 across the top long-ways with some vertical braces (4*4?) going from the shelf to the ground; this would provide upside down storage for cast iron-based stands. We had a locking panel for a door. This solution is likely...

When they work they are OK at best. Nothing as amazing as a Space Echo. Aren't those the Eddie Van Halen "Eruption" echo? There's a fine example of their dubious quality. However, they can feedback (if it's that one) and they can do real time tape-based pitch dives (again, if it's the same model), ...

Which of my speakers would be good monitoring candidates?

I have decent monitors (not great; they are EV studio monitors). I also have AR-2Ax and Infinity Quantum-5 speakers. I have heard that the AR's are good for monitoring. Most of these will be run through an Alesis 100 watt "reference" amp, except for the Infinitys, which need a WHOLE lot more headroo...

Creating a Monitoring Space in a Rental

I have recently had to select a rental that has good isolation from neighbors (necessary for band practice) but awful choices for spaces to edit. I have three choices regarding creating a monitoring situation: I can go on the sides of the "hot-dog style" room, or at one end. I guess I could go at an...

Pro Tools Compare function toggling by itself

I am usign Pro Tools 7.0 and the compare function keeps toggling itself whenever I change plug in settings beyond a certain amount. I have uninstalled from the disc and reinstalled, and I have deleted the digidesign databases, but it still keeps coming back.
Anyone else run into this?

Actually, that was the first place I went and i was not happy with what I found at all (especially in Wikipedia). IMO, this kind of question is excellent for Google, or Wikipedia. Many questions are subject to opinion and experience, but why wait for a response when all you need is a definition? Fol...

Well, is the term "stems" a way to describe what you consolidate all your Pro Drools regions into before making backups that are platform-independant? Because I have been digitizing a bunch of old reel-to reel 1/4 track format stuff from a classical clients archive, and it seems reealy important (no...

I don't know what a stem is!!!

Man, I feel like an idiot. I have been reading tapeop for years, and recording (albeit amateurly) for decades, and I don't know what a stem mix is!
The Wikipedia entry seems totally different from stems as they keep being discussed in the mag...HELP!

Black Sabbath

I've been listening to the first two Black Sabbath albums recently. I remain amazed by how awesome they still sound to me.
How about an article discussing the techniques/engineering on THOSE records?

Seeking drum/vox manual gating probs/tips, tutorial links

The situation- basement rehearsal track editing, some live small room recording. Lately, due to my newb-primitive-style gating technique, I have been editing out the leak in my drum mics tracks by hand. I really could use a good tutorial somewhere on gating. I have learned to HEAR compression and ga...

i actually had to make this choice when we went to Malaysia for a month last year. my picks were: ELO - Time (i refuse to defend this, but i am glad i brought it to listen to!) No one should have to defend any choice per their personal taste; and no one should especially EVER have to defend ELO as ...
