Hi r0t4ry You can use 2 transformers, but there are simpler & cheaper options. Option 1: Have a transformer wound for yourself with 24v & 48v windings. I have successfully used a 317 for phantom power, see my PSU here: http://1176neve.tripod.com/id26.html The 317 data sheet details the input/output differential should not be more than 37v, so the 317 can be floated for higher voltages. If you short the 48v to ground, it instantly blows the 317, tho...

A solid state amp should be fine as a starter. If you stay away from the mains side of the power transformer, the secondary voltages will probably not do any harm. Transformers in wall warts are also generally the cheapest parts the maker can get away with. I've tried various wall warts with FX pedals & they almost always sound better with a decent power supply. The Roland/Boss warts did sound better than the generic cheapo's.
