Re: Compessor Plug-ins, any preferences?
You owe it to yourself to check out the UA versions of the LA2A and 1176. I haven't heard the TDM versions myself, but if they're as good as the UAD-1 versions, they're truly great. Not available for RTAS, I'm pretty sure, so you're out of luck if you're running an 001.

Re: what would you do? (A/D conversion toss up)
The 888s are lousy, though the later ones are definitely better than the earlier. Go with the HD guy. Even if you have to do it twice it'll still be cheaper, though this sort of job is difficult to screw up and I doubt you'll have any problems. Besides, the HD guy probably needs all the cash he can ...

Re: Any Hardy users out there?
E (and Eric, posting simultaneously!): Thanks, I'll be in touch. As you know, the M-1 uses a single op-amp in the signal path while the Twin Servo uses two, but it may still be a valid comparison in many respects. The J99 isn't intended to be a slavish copy of Hardy's Twin Servo, but people who are ...

Any Hardy users out there?
Is there anyone out there who owns or is familiar with the John Hardy Twin Servo preamp? I'm hoping to find someone who's used this beast to review my new thing, the J99 mic pre that I've been promising for months. Let me know if you're interested.

Re: Analog semi-pro going to PC DAW- suggestions?
Yes, I realize the 001 doesn't have dedicated DSPs. But I still think it's a cynical ploy by Digidesign to get people locked into ProTools in the hope that they'll eventually move to a TDM system. And even though it's native, the 001 still doesn't provide the open architecture and expansion capabili...

Re: Analog semi-pro going to PC DAW- suggestions?
RME is definitely the Cadillac of PC interfaces, but check this thing out: http://www.frontierdesign.com/pr_dakota.htm I've seen them on ebay for $400, and I've been using mine for almost 4 years now with no problems whatever. Pros are the LightPipe interface, ADAT sync, and SMPTE, cons are the 48K ...

High Quality Mic Pre Kits!
Get the color and character of the classic Neve 1272 for a lot less than the cost of a racked vintage module with the Seventh Circle Audio N72. Built with modern components on a single, high-quality, double-sided circuit board, the N72 preamp is faithful to the original Neve circuitry, is easy to bu...

Re: Help needed with an analog+digital question! thanks.
I don't know if this is really helpful, and it's over your budget, but if you're committed to the PC mixing thing, then the best money you can spend is for a UAD-1 and it's suite of proprietary plug-ins. They're about $600 or so at your local wanker warehouse, and the 1176, LA2A, and Pultec plugs ma...

Re: Headphone Amps
I've got an Oz Audio HM6 as well, and I really like it. It has a stereo input plus 4 mono inputs, each bussed to all 6 headphone outputs. If you track entire bands a lot, it's worth the few extra dollars for all the time and aggravation it saves getting headphone mixes that everyone likes. Plus it's...

Re: Tube substitutions for a tiny little amp: 12av6, 50c5, 3
Actually, if what you really want is more headroom, the rectifier diode might be the first thing to substitute, and not with another tube. My RCA tube manual says a 35W4 will drop 15V at its maximum forward current of 100mA, which is a pretty big percentage of the supply voltage, I'll bet. If you ca...

APIs surely are great, but they're not the only modular preamp you can buy one at a time.

Re: Oscilloscope???
A good used scope might be a Tektronix 465, if you can find one that's not too beat up. You can probably get one for less than $100. These were industry standard workhorses and can handle just about any audio job. The newer Tektronix 2236 had a DMM and frequency counter built in. These can easily be...
