Dave,

That might become the official answer for the Recording Techniques forum! Just change 'optical compressor' with whatever people are wondering about. I love it!

Great stuff guys! I never really messed with the pads for tone. I haven't "needed" a pad in a long while so I just haven't bothered. The 4047 comment sepcifically got me. I'm gonna use them on OH Tueday night and I think I'll start with the pads in to see if they do some cool stuff. Thanks for makin...

I've got my RADAR monitor off to the side too. One of my favorite features of RADAR is being able to turn the screen saver so the musicians don't come in 'Look at the take."

Mic the reflection, not the source.... That is the fun thing about the technique. It "sounds closer to the mic" because the mic is recording the reflection from the boundary. You can rotate the mics to phase grate across the spectrum with various levels of success. Have a crashy drummer? rotate the...

Opto compression is in general a little slower and smoother. It's very useful and works on a lot of sources. Sometimes I want the compressor to 'grab' quicker and more obviously. Then I go for a different type of compressor. For instance the bass in an up-tempo pop song. I might not want the nice sm...

I would guess the difference would be subtle. The wood will have a fairly thick finish on it and that will impede the sound of the wood itself.

Do they have to be mounted in the wall? I'd go with stands because designing the proper soffit is not easy, I have been told.

For an acoustic and voice together I often use a figure 8 for the vocal. It keeps the guitar out of the vocal nicely. Then I have some options with compression, EQ and even effects.

Sometimes I get one mic so it works of both sources nicely and record that way.
