There is a really great book called Perfecting Sound Forever: An Aural History of Recorded Music. It's pretty great. It runs from the wax cylinder through MP3's. Does a nice job explaining the Loudness War and puts it in context without getting too obtuse. I'd also recommend looking up some writings...

I suppose a small security camera system could be employed to do this. Some of the systems I've seen could be scaled down to just the cameras and software. It's not like you need a DVR to record the exchanges. There are even wireless models. Here's a link for a wireless two camera setup. with router...

At the risk of sounding stupid: most folks have a compressor in the signal chain even if they're not compressing. If you need additional gain, why not bump the makeup gain on the comp before you hit your console or DAW? And speaking of reverb chambers, I never understood the massive gain needs for ...

As some know, I do construction for a living, so it's pretty easy to make a go at DIY projects. A lot of your decision should go into how valuable your time is. DIY will take a dozen times longer than pros. My electrical skills are ninja caliber. Watch me try and mud drywall and hold back the tears ...

In a very unscientific study for a recent project, I had the singer try out the mic in the room (very live wood paneling, tile floor) at various distances away from the mic. Then we tried it in the booth which was treated. He preferred the sound of the much deader room. I agreed with him. It wasn't ...

I'm nearly done with my soundproofing project myself. I live in a 2 flat (I'm the landlord) and my tenants are on the first floor, studio in the basement. They got tired (rightly so) of having my drums sound like I was playing in their bedroom. Now I have not tested it yet, but I can tell you that t...

I had a site survey done for the possibility of converting my two flat into a single family. He gave me measured drawings of the basement, first and second floor and it ran around $2K. I think how much you pay a studio designer depends a lot on how involved the project is. Inquire about rates and a ...

Brother, I do construction and many times the architect will be out of state. In your case, have an architect do a site survey. This will document all of the room dimensions, type of construction, location of utilities and so forth. After that, you'll be given a set of drawings that lay it all out s...
