Was cutting some drum tracks today, and put up an old Wollensak mic which came with one of their popular tape recorders. I faced the mic into the corner and ran it thru a Tampa pre/compressor which is a pretty cool piece of gear. Fantastic sound. And I got it for 4 bucks.
That's all...

Re: Kudos to the AT 4033
My first good mic! This mic got me thru for several years before I managed to buy several. The price has dropped since those days- it listed at around $750 back then, and I think I paid $495 from Caruso Music in CT- plug... A great mic for someone who can't afford much but who needs something qualit...

Any TapeOp heads possibly attending the LeMay Automobile Museum car show on Saturday in Tacoma?
I'll be travelling there tomorrow night, and would love to hook up if anyone is going to be attending.

Re: professionals recording practice amps?
Less is often more in many ways. I, too have a Fender Blues Junior- great amp, although I recently damaged it- old lap steel cranking thru... now I have to find out what's wrong. High end is missing. When it works, it's great. My fave amp, however, is a '96 Matchless Lightning 15 watt, 2x10. Gorgeou...

Poppatwang- That's exactly right. Yes, people get screwed all the time- in fact, the best lessons I learned about the music business never happened in conjunction with good, always the worst, just like life. There are many people who will screw you if you let them, managers, publishers, producers, a...

[quote="Catoogie"]...Paying your manager a percentage of your income is the way it is, it's how we get paid. It's honest work, although not all managers are honest. I'm just not down for owning songs that aren't mine. That reminds me of some Alan Freid shit. If you didn't write it you shouldn't be o...

[quote="Catoogie"]WOW!!! I would never take 25% of a writers song if I didn't have a hand in writing it. I currently have a band I'm handling who are about to sign with Atlantic and I take my percentage as a manager but that's it. They own their own songs. I would be ashamed to take a share of their...

Re: i'm looking at a record contract...
You need to find out what 'ownership' of your songs means. In other words, just because they hold the copyright doesn't mean you can't make anything off the song. It probably means that for every dollar the song earns, you get 50 cents. I've had 3 publishing deals over the years. Not one of those de...

Re: Blue Microphones?
I bought the Blue Bottle last year with 2 capsules - the B6 (comes with it) and the B7. In essence I got 2 mics, but can only use one at a time. Because I record label projects at my home, I had to make a substantial investment in a microphone, and after lots of research, I had a long discussion wit...

That's a great idea. I will contact BLUE and see what they do. They seem like good folks, so here's hoping.
Thanks everyone.

Good question.
I'm assuming this because the lights in the power supply go off. Then it warms up again and everything is cool. It's some intermittent thing...

Power supply question
I've been using the BLUE bottle for just over a year- a great mic, and it isn't cheap. Last week I was recording vocals on some women from Boston, and of course I had the Bottle in use. Every once in a while, the power supply would cut off and then slowly warm up again... I've used this mic in long ...

Re: Pain in the ass clients?
Gram Parsons used to sing a song called "Cash On the Barrelhead". I've found that when people want a discount, paying cash up front is worth it to me and to them. I am slowly learning that you've got to get at least a partial payment before rolling tape. If they cancel the day before, they need to p...

ProToolsOp
Well, here we go again. I just bought John Scofield's new cd, which is great, by the way. Under engineering credits- that phrase: "ProTools Operator". I suspect that the credit was suggested by whoever the PTO is, but nonetheless, it's like the drummer saying "list me as Gretsch operator" and the ke...

I was up in Chicago for a gig at the Chicago Folk Festival put on by the Old Town School of folk, and I took a walk looking for a pawnshop, which I never found. However, I did wander into a place where some guy was having a garage sale, and he had a Wollensak tape deck. I just wanted the mic, and I ...
