Re: 3000 bucks
Yeah, I can't stand Motley Crue, but she kicked ass. She was the best drummer they ever had. Maybe you should take the money and record at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini. Or have Greg do it in Studio B, get Hoyt Dooley or Dave Harris to do the mastering, and buy two days instead of one. Anyone e...

Re: rules
But gee, Dave, don't the vast amounts of new and distintive-sounding music on commercial rock radio convince you otherwise?

Re: 3000 bucks
Business has been slow here, but is starting to pick up. I'm a freelance engineer and drummer here in town. I know good and well where Kings Mountian is. I did an on-air thing for WNCW not long ago and played a gig in Shelby just before that. There's also a studio in Gastonia where I do a fair amoun...

So much for Tape Op. I feel bad about the initial Electrical post now.

Re: fatten my sound
Roger, Thanks for the response. It's apparent that you do know your stuff. Me too, you ask? Actually not. I don't usually grab a compressor (or expander) unless there is a dynamic elemant that I feel would benefit from such. I do hear a difference in the tone of Drawmer gates and Aphex expanders, bu...

Re: fatten my sound
Roger, I was joking, somewhat. I'm very well-aware of what compressors do (and limiters, for that matter). My point was more along the lines of, why always a compressor and not better EQ choices or mic placement? It always seems to come back to compression, especially by people who don't have much e...

Re: Need Help Troubleshooting
A couple other things to consider: Not that it should matter THAT much, but were you using the -10 pads? Did you have the mics in a near coincident pattern or such that he may have hit the mics while playing? Those guys are right, you should test the mics with different pres and then test the pres w...

Re: my first time
If you're unfamiliar with Pro Tools, but they want you to mix it, why did they dump it from the 16-track into Pro Tools? Was it purely for editing? If so, could they dump it back? I know you'll lose a generation, but it seems kind of silly to me to have you mix it in a completely unfamiliar environm...

Re: the mixing formula.....????
If the mixes sound great on some systems and not on others, I'd say that a good mastering engineer (a good one, not necessarily an expensive one) can do wonders for making it sound good on a number of different systems. I have very strong opinions about the importance of a good mastering engineer. A...

Re: fatten my sound
Just out of curiosity, what makes so many people think that putting a compressor in line will automatically make their sound fatter?

Yeah, Shawn's totally right. Great advice! Make sure that one of the CDs you take is some stuff that you've done and like. If there's an assistant or someone there who has worked the room before, ask their opinions. I always like to find out where the "sweet spots" and not-so-sweet spots are in a ro...

Re: anyone tried Behringer DSP8024 Ultra Curve RTA?
Yeah, the Behringer graphics are really noisy and my experience (after seeing several come in to the studio in musicians' racks) is that they get worse with age. But that shouldn't affect you if you're using it purely as an RTA.
