Acoustic Foam

is this stuff really worth the $$$? should i just buy some mattress pads instead? i just need to take care of one wall (about 12' x 8' would do it).

i'd rather not have the ugly yellow stuff on the wall. is there anything cheaper than the auralex stuff?

thanks for your input

Re: High end problems??

thanks for the input. i just bought an mrl tape, so i will get to work on EQing the machine.

i kinda think the monitor and room stuff isn't really an issue, cuz the reference cds are going thru all the same stuff.

i don't mix super loud, but i would guess i'm over 85 dB usually.

High end problems??

Ok, I've been doing a lot of A/Bing my mixes to reference cds recently and the high end on my mixes doesn't even come close to most of them. I'm not sure how much of that difference is from the reference Cds being mastered or if it's just my gear. I definitely need to tweak the EQ on my tape machine...

Re: Favorite Reference Mixes

stoner witch sounds brutal, but the guitar tone on that converge record is a bit too harsh for my ears...i dunno.

i mostly record hc/punk stuff, so:

helmet - meantime
smashing pumpkins - siamese dream
his hero is gone - monuments to thieves
refused - shape of punk to come
botch - we are the romans

Power

ok, i've had my studio in a pratice space but i just moved into a new place and wanna move operations into the house. however, i'm concerned about having enough power to keep it all running. it's a 3 bedroom, 2 floor house with basement. i didn't give it much thought until i overheard an electrician...

Re: 70's Concert Toms

can't hurt to try the bottom, but i'd guess, unless you got right up on the underside of the top head, you'd have an awful bleed problem.

i think i've only tried putting mics on the bottom when there were heads. either way, the results were awful.

Re: I hate the D112

i haven't heard the D6 or the sennheiser mic in question. but i have A/B'd the D112 and the Shure Beta 52 i liked the shure much better. As far as that modern kick sound, i think it does it much better. a lot more low end in there, too.

Re: Tell me about the Tascam M3600

these are the ones with the tiny faders for the tape returns, right? i've seen em go for a bit cheaper than $1500. i'd look around. definitely seen em on ebay for under a grand. i've never really used one much. i don't think tascam has the greatest reputation for pre's. tho, it does have a lot of st...

Beyer M69

I used to use these for micing guitar cabs at this radio station i worked at. I really loved em, but i have never seen them anywhere except for a handfull of times on ebay. i thought they still made them. what is the going rate for them new/used? and where the hell can i find them. any help is appre...

tape machine maintenance in Brooklyn, NY

i think i've actually posted this before. does anyone know anyone reliable and hopefully not super expensive who can service a tascam ms-16?

i don't think it needs anything major, but i'm sure it could use a look. been doing some wacky things recently.

thanks

AKG 414 vs AT4050

Ok, are the 414s really worth the extra $$? i record loud rock bands, and usually track all the instruments live in the same room. i would use these for overheads and possibly vocals, maybe room mics if that ever made any sense. i am almost thinking it might be best to just buy at4033s and spend the...
