I got a Bell and Howell extension speaker out of a free box in a warehouse complex I used to live in. its a 12" with a little paper cone tweeter highpassed off a big capacitor. It's made to be plugged into a 16mm projector like they used to use in school. Even had a big ole 16mm reel in the back on ...

Voodoo Labs Sparkledrive. It has a clean mix knob that allows you to dial in enough clean signal to bring the gut-rumbly low end. It's the only distortion pedal that I have been able to use on bass and retain some of the low end. +1 on the Sparkle Drive. Great for faking the SVT-style grind. Even b...

I'd say the blue max is a highly underated compressor. I have yet to get it to misbehave in a noisy way like some do. The presets are actually pretty useful, but I leave it on manual most of the time. It doesnt dull the heck out of program material like some other budget comps do. I would say never ...

honestly there are a klot of sub $1000 pres, but not all of them are any good. Some folks like the Behringer and ART stuff. I cant stand it. The Eureka sounds like it would be good. Some folks love it some hate it. I havent had a chance to look at it. I suppose most of the 500 series that are made b...

i have to disagree
I have to disagree. I have a 1604 in my home setup. I basically just use it for monitoring and (rarely) for some extra mic pres. I used to think it was noisy, but eventually concluded that you have to hit the hell out of the inputs. Crank it. Get the levels up. I have used Ramsas, yamahas, Tascams a...

I have been recording bands i am in or my solo stuff for years. I have little issue with it. It's a balancing act of your left and right brain really. If I can just keep moving forward doing what i am comfortable with in the studio its no problem. but as soon as things stop working as expected. Or t...

yeah didnt this whole phenomenon get exposed on of all things South Park? Thanks for pointing out, "as engineers" we generally have to resist the temptation to lapse into the blissful subjectivity of the "audiophiles". Objectively I have to say this is a bunch of crap. I do a lot of recording of jus...

Crystal and Carbon Button
this is may latest thing to do when I get bored. I pick up old carbon or crystal mics. They have absurd impedances like 20 ohms or 5,000 ohms, or in the case of the crystal sometimes they just dont really have an impedance. So I cut off the usualyly useless connector and screw a couple of bannana pl...

Micsi wish I knew more of or could afford to but on a whim. That ugly Samson ribbon. the Sennheiser 906 (I think its a 609 with a 421 style filter on it?) anybody use the ATM450 (side oriented SDC)? Or the Pulsar II (Maudio SDC) or anybody try any of those Heil mics on kick? I am just dying for a ne...

I think spec wise transformers do roll of bass below their resonance, but then they resonate dont they? So yeah you have a bump like a high q filter, at 60 or 80 hz, then it drops away. So no, you dont get a perfect sine wave at 30 hz. But the low e on a bass guitar will sound better in a tranny. Al...

maybe its just me but i have never been a fan of anything symetrix. i used to lust after their stuff when they made the only affordable outboard preamp, and aonly affordable voice channel. but its just too hard sounding to my ears. I get all the versions of the 160 confused. If you can get an origin...

More ON topic. I have seen a reverb/delay feedback with the sound system and maybe some kind of aliasisng effect and cause a singers voice to go flat. But not subtly, it was like the voice of satan coming out of a skinny goth girl. I do that all the time. Why wouldn't you want that? I mean not usin...
