So we've come full circle: After seven versions of the mix with various "old-school" methods and fakery applied, we've come to the consensus that I should do a nice balanced mix that highlights the performance of the band, without trying to shove it into a sonic hole that's the wrong shape. The ulti...

OP here again. I run UAD also (Laptop Solo) and feel the same way about that. I appreciated having the special processor to run the whiz-bang UAD plugs that would have bogged down my old laptop, but my new one has so much juice it makes me sad I can't devote any of it to the UAD stuff. Also, I'm goi...

Gobos will definitely help. If your main concern is a "listenable" scratch vocal, it's totally possible even in a small space. What mice are you using now? Some that I would recommend: Beta 58 (you see this all the time in live radio w/ the band vocals), Sennheiser 421, Electrovoice 660 (very tight ...

So I bought a new iLok today (was going to need it anyway) and by an act of glorious luck, the old one worked when I plugged it in, just long enough to transfer all my licenses over to the new one. Then it promptly stopped working again. Phew. Maybe I should look into that ZDT thing...

iLok bit the dust

My 2nd generation iLok has developed the flashing blue light of death. No computer will recognize it, and my Google sleuthing has led me to believe this is a common problem with the 2nd gen units and my options now are limited. As I understand, I can spend $50 to return my broken unit to PACE and ha...

I really like my LD1's from Pacific Pro Audio here in Seattle. They're re-branded Chinese imports but I can't find a fault with them: http://www.pacificproaudio.com/microphones.asp I find them fairly neutral but pleasingin terms of sound. Definitely using them for vocals and acoustic guitar a lot. I...

I would guess if you don't have a pair of the same mic, use the darker of the two for close duty and the brighter for distance duty, to balance out the tone difference between the two.

People ask me if I use tape in my little studio, and I say "all the time!"

They come down and say "but where's the tape machine?" and it gets awkward real quick.

The other night we made a hihat clutch out of gaff, It mostly didn't suck!

Snarl, I think that's the first time anyone has apologized for calling me a well-trained musician ;) I totally get what you're saying though. For the record, we smoke as much ganj as any other group of pasty Seattle-ites. Things are coming along nicely, I'll post another link soon if anyone wants to...

Lynval Golding from the Specials likes to sit in with us when he's in town. In fact, my first professional band experience was with him back in 2004.

Here's him and us a couple summers ago, that's me playing bass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb9p76cZ33o

O.P. here, Ah! Everyone replied too fast for me to address each reply without writing a dissertation... which I want to do anyways, but not RIGHT now. But geez, I'm going to be tied up with applying these suggestions for a while, so thank everyone who chimed in. I will be back with more to critique ...

Getting that Old-School sound (or not)

Oh elder gods of the TOMB, bestow upon me your trove of infinite wisdom... I bit off more than I can chew (or stomach) when I told my ska band I can record us and get that 60's Studio One ska sound. In Protools. I wimped out and multitracked everything for super-clean for safety. I'm taking many att...

Lately I've been forcing myself to listen to reference tracks before tracking/during mixing. I always wanted to in the past, but I think I avoided it because I would get upset about how I couldn't match sounds with professional stuff. But since forcing myself into it, things keep getting closer to m...
