Re: Tape Plugins
I like Massey Tapehead too, but it's more of an effect than the ATR. A little goes a long way. I especially like it on OHs to mellow out the cymbals. I used to do this all the time. I'd turn the drive all the way down and the trim all the way up. Basically just reseats the midrange and high end so ...

Didn’t mean to jump to conclusions there, but obviously way different when you’re playing vs engineering. If you have friends working in fancy places see if you can hang in the control room, never know who might have some tricks you can steal.

Re: Lost in the wilds of lo/mid-fi -- your thoughts please.
Try a project or a session in a pro studio. So much of the bedroom type studio thing involves knowing what things "should" sound like and compensating for lack of room treatment, poor monitoring in the mix room, whatever. Compression is also a big deal, if you like old tapey records they are effecti...

Re: Choosing drum overheads for small room
All good advice so far, I'd definitely be looking to get the OH as low as feasible. The main thing you I'd do is reach out to the house engineer or whomever else is in that room regularly and ask them what they'd do. No substitute for someone with ears who's already spent the time figuring shit out.

Re: Recapping Studer 962 Power Supply
Took another look and it seems like there are a good number of those negative holes just floating in dark green nothing space. Some caps only have one negative lead connected to a trace. Others have 2, but they seem to be on the same trace. None have 3 connected to a trace. When there's only one neg...

Re: Mixing/mastering for video conferencing
I tend to deliver things pretty hot and not very dynamic for the data compression/streaming world. I find the low level stuff gets mangled and swirly. So if you master like it's 2003 you might even be better off. I try to do it in stages (individual track comps, bus comps, master comp, then limiter)...

Re: Recapping Studer 962 Power Supply
Yeah, it's double sided. Don't have it in front of me right now, but I think some negative holes don't connect to anything and all of the positive ones do. Easy enough to figure out from here, thanks for setting me straight.

Re: Recapping Studer 962 Power Supply
I was so hoping that was the answer. So I can just add some spare legs to the existing negative pin so it goes to all three negative solder points? And I won't even explode anything?

Recapping Studer 962 Power Supply
Fun times. There are these old german caps that have 4 pins, as far as I can tell I can't get new ones so I'm wondering what I should replace them with. They are leaking and very obviously need to be replaced. The manual shows that the center pin is +, but there are no + or - markings on the cap its...

Acoustician in NYC
Heya good tapeop folks. I'm looking for an acoustician to make recommendations for sound absorption in a 400ish seat chapel space in Manhattan. Who are the go tos?

Re: Limiter on rough mixes
This is true, but there's overs on loads and loads of CDs and they sound fine. I'm talking big time, famous, legitimate barcoded records. I've analyzed a ton of them and overs are more the rule than the exception. I always found this interesting. In school I learned that -.3 should be the top but y...
