Re: What's a natural step up from sm81s?

I saved up for a while to get sm81s because I had used them before, after feeling I had "outgrown" using MXLs and other cheapies a while back. I think I am starting to outgrow the 81s, and would like to add to my collection. Right now I'm looking hard at the AKG c451b, and the AT4051. I was wonderi...

PTLE 6.4 is indeeed the last version that will run on a Digi001. DigiDesign wrote code into version 6.7 to make it NOT work wth a Digi001.

Micing an acoustic at the 12th fret is common because it sounds good for many of the uses of acoustic guitar in modern music. However, it is not an accurate representaiton of the instrument. Indeed, just about any close micing technique with an acoustic guitar is inaccurate to some extent or another...

ADAT S/MUX to allow for 96k recording on more than 2 channels (I'm speaking of PTLE and corresponding interfaces). Also, wordclock.

I think the reason this placement is used is simple - it sounds good for a whole variety of applications, from strummed chords destined to be buried in a full mix to solo fingerstyle. I look at it this way. It is true that most of the sound comes from the soundboard. By placing at the 12th fret (or ...

OS 10.3.4 is the last supported version according to Digidesign. There are folks using a Digi001 with versions up to 10.3.9, but it simply doesn't work with 10.4x.

I tried higerh 10.3.x versions (above 10.3.4). Didn't work right. I'm at 10.3.4 and I'm not going anywhere.

If you bypass the pres and converters (totally), the unit (although lobotomized) works great. That's kind of sad. ;-) Well, I suppose it is. Still, the Digi001 was designed to a price point, about $800 IIRC. Back then (late '90s, early '00s) it provided quite a bit of functionality and versatility ...

If you're using the Digi001 preamps, line ins or line outs, converters and/or clock that's not surprising. If you bypass the pres and converters (totally), the unit (although lobotomized) works great.

I have a matched pair of the ADK CE. I just got them so I haven't spent enough time with them yet to really know them well. I can tell already that I like them. They're nice, very nice actually. I only record solo fingerstyle acoustic and classical guitar. They will compliment the other mics I have ...

I would take the Josephsons over the Oktavas almost always. Clearer, more detailed and accurate. However, the modular design of the Oktava is nice. The mod improves things. Cheaper too.

You might also consider the Peluso CEMC6 modular SD series. Very nice mics.

I upgraded a 450MHz Sawtooth G4 (your 400 should be a Sawtooth too) with the Sonnett 1.0 GHz upgrade. It's been working fine for nearly two years. Running PTLE 6.4, plugins (including Altiverb 5).

I've got 1 gig ram.

I've been using it since Version 2. Now I'm on 5. It's a great product that has matured nicely. The IRs are great. They should really port this plug over to the Windows side. Maybe they will.

My vote would go to that group of tube preamps blending old and new, such as the Pendulum MDP-1a, DW Fearn VTP2, Manley, Forsell, etc.

Those pres will be around for a long time.
