I was thinking ribbons too, but the problem is that good ones ain't cheap. I think you're more likely to find a decent pair of condensers in your price range than ribbons. Beyer M160s can be cool drum OHs, but they're $750 each new. Maybe somebody can chime in on the Oktava ribbons, I've never used ...

I said that already, several pages back. Apparently no one wanted to hear it. :P God dammit, you did- and on page 4, no less! An example. Roger Foote offered a number of Pico 500 series compressors as both full and partial kits. The full kit cost $400. He found his 'free' postmortem assistance to c...

Then you get to a point where the thing is already built, just assemble with some screws and snap a couple of connectors in. They may as well do that themselves and offer a complete product, tested and warrenteed. At that point the costs are not much more to finish the thing themselves instead of s...

The workers are controlling the means of production. I'm not sure if it's the workers controlling the means of production so much as it's a major Asian economic superpower controlling the means of production while artificially keeping it's currency devalued to better manipulate global markets. Ah, ...

I dropped in to see an acquaintance yesterday who is kinda like the Fred Sanford of pro audio. He was clapping his hands and grinning, and I knew he'd just made a major score. He'd just bought out a video production house and showed me piles of equipment including cameras, an Avid system, six (!) Wh...

Used Symetrix and Ashly gear can sometimes be had cheap, and it's quality stuff- they're "clean", not "character" though. I know both companies made parametric EQs.

If there is an increase in the number of people making music, I think that's great- I'm just not sure there is. There is definitely an increase in the number of people recording their music though, which is great. I'm sure many of us remember an era where bands formed, wrote songs, played shows, and...

I made an argument about the relative scarcity of music back in the 1970s and 80s either early in this thread or in the one that spawned it...now music is everywhere, it's fucking wallpaper. Why should people respect it? Not only is music everywhere, but you can get pretty much any song you want at...

I disagree. I think the mindset is very strongly influenced by the environment and the tools. I do agree that some people set-out to make decisions and others, if they're honest, don't actually intend to make any decisions - they just want to experiment with technology as a hobby. It sounds like yo...

I'd suspect it has something to do with what you're recording with it. If it's a loud signal like a guitar cab, you're not going to have a problem. If it's a quiet signal, that's where it can become an issue. True- I never thought of an RE-20 as a "low output" mic when I was using it on kicks and b...

What is it about the drum sound you don't like? I imagine the ceiling is making your drums kind of boxy- lots of hard reflective surfaces right by the drums isn't ideal. Whatever you do, I'd try deadening the ceiling above the drummer. Also, don't overdo your treatment- no reflections at all make th...

I DO NOT GIVE A SHIT WHETHER OR NOT YOU OR ANYONE ELSE IS DOING "REAL DIY". Seriously!!! Then why do you keep bringing it up? I certainly don't care enough about it to make it the crux of my argument with anyone on this thread. Why do you? I don't. Try re-reading my posts. You were the first to sli...

Yeah. But, I'm assuming what people in this thread are suggesting is that they could have the simple components wave soldered by the same company that makes the PCB and it wouldn't cost any more at all. It would cost more than just the bare PCB of course, but it should not triple the cost of the un...

I'm almost certain none of these small companies are getting boards stuffed by anyone other than whatever small labor force exists in their shops. So pre-stuffed would cost much more, and be damn close to finished product, which clearly sells for even more. I see absolutely no manufacturing incenti...

JESUS!!! It's not about feeling like less of a man!! I think that your own insecurities are getting in the way of your comprehension here. I wasn't referring to you at all but since you feel the shoe fits, by all means wear it. "Insecurities"? Physician, heal thyself. This is about a bunch of peopl...
