Re: Recording Drums/3 Mics: What Where?
those are 3 nice mics for a kit. they give you alot of options. i would use the royer over the drummers right shoulder. u195 a foot in front of the kick. then if you want snare control i would put the 4033 on the snare, if you want ambience use it as a room mic. be sure to watch for phase!! this is ...

the slick production i actually do not mind, but the songs seem uninspired, the magic is missing. maybe the next one will be better.

why is my tape machine so hot??!!!
i know the mx 5050 cranks out some hot sounds, but the machine itself as of late has been generating heat. the top (under the reels) is probably reaching about 90-100 degrees after a day of work. she seems to be working fine, but i am woried this can damage the tape. can it?? any body guess the reas...

Re: Neotek Console
i have worked on a series 2. it is my favorite by far of the mid level consoles. much more character than a mci. the old ones are gonna have matinence issues, and the new ones are real pricey. the neotek elan i have heard sounds good as well. i do not know anyone who has worked on their high end boa...

using +6 on +9 bias????
i just got a bunch of quantegy 456. my machine is biased and cal. for +9, igenerally use gp9. my question is, will 456 work ok? i know it will distort at 3db less. but will the difference in bias affect the way it records? do i need to mess with the bias?

Re: $10,000
if i did it all over again and had to make a record in my house i would spend, assuming you want a rock record $400 ns-10s monitors $600 on cables and stands $1600 on a daw and interface $600 on an otari mx5050 1/2" 8 track $50 patchbay $1000 ua 2108 mic pre 2 channels $400 for 2 bellari rp220s mic ...

Re: 1" 8 track vs. 1/2" 8 track
evan, yeah the whole mighty rime record was crammed on the 8 tracks of the otari mx 5050. i know some one here that has one for sale that has a mechanical issue, but the guy who actually designed the thing for otari is a tech here and still works on them, and needless to say he rules. i can check it...

Re: what tape(s) for 320 nwb/m
320nb is for +9 tape. i would suggest quantegy gp9 or quantegy 499. personally i like gp9, it is also easier on your tape heads.

recording for charity
not sure if this is the right place to post this but oh well. i have been very unhappy recently about the narcissistic aproach of musicians today, especially those in the "indie" scene. like most i just bitch about it. i have struggled in my mind daily about the point to playing / recording music, a...

Re: 1" 8 track vs. 1/2" 8 track
yo evan throw down the cash for an otari mx 5050. it is half inch and sounds like a world of rock on drums and bass. 1 inch machines sound badd ass, butt they will be expensive, and tape will cost more. i just got a daw and use the mx5050 on the front end. they cost less than $1k, i do not think the...
