Used a SansAmp original (now Classic) for years. Set it to clean, add pedals to it, and you're good to go.

Going to the original post, if you're looking at preamps for ribbons, here's a good rundown:

Syteks are also great for high straight gain.

Maybe the Cloudlifter would be a good addition too.

The Alesis Wedge is a close descendant of the Midiverb IV, and I think they sound great too.

Get powered speakers (of which there are bajillions and frankly pretty cheap) and your board to PC options will multiply.

If your tracking room acoustics is not up to par by your ears (treated or otherwise set up for a sound you like), a condensor or any other sensitive mic is fairly pointless.

At least factor that into your purchase decision.

The HD24 is very reliable - that's why so many people use them for location recording. Plus virtually no latency. The drive caddies that are stock use IDE drives- although you can still find them new and certainly used, it's probably worth getting extra SATA compatible caddies just to stay current w...

You can try using a Triton FET Head or a Cloudlifter.

I used the noise reduction in Adobe Audition for most of my sound design work including VO work- edfective and highly recommended.

Don't be afraid to try other dynamics...

IMHO, the real discussion is how music is curated (to use a high falutin' academic word). The online world has changed how music is (or isn't) curated. Pre-internet, your choices to find out about new music boiled down to word of mouth, record stores (and clerks), the radio or maybe a music magazine...

A cool and cheap variation on the SM57-58 stylee, are the EV N/D mic's. I swear I've not heard a bad one. I really like the 267 on amps, and have been using the 767 on my vox at band practice. (Yes, I am again inna band ...) Another cool mic is the Senn 609; it's quite useable on vox and percussion...

Ummm.... .... maybe we all forgot our roots and neglected to remember that not all cassette 4 tracks take balanced and/or low-z mic inputs. Doing some quick googling, it looks like the inputs are NOT balanced nor hi-Z on the OP's Yamaha MT4X. Manual: http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/pa/english/re...

You should stretch a little and not go to obvious places like Portlandia.

* Nashville
* New Orleans
* Twin Cities
* How about the other Portland (Maine)?

Maybe if you want to stay west, try something else like Bend.

Whaddya think?
