Horse-hide glue, the traditional glue of luthiers, is 'unglued' by applying heat mostly & occasionally some steam for stubborn joints. I had to get a guitar re-setup after leaving it in a hot car trunk w/ the strings tensioned. It was a '30's vintage acoustic. Felt quite boneheadish afterwards. jwp

A friend of mine used to make sound collages & almost all the chaotic background canvas was from movie soundtracs.

hope that helps

I thought that was really great too. Gets the creative juices flowing to break out of preconceived notions of how things should be recorded. Can't get more DIY then garbage can reverb!

FYI: Generally, unless the guitar has extra bracing or blocking (like an ES335), long extended loud feedback sessions can actually vibrate a hollow body guitar apart. Ben Harper used to have a lot of problems w/ his Weissenborn lap steels vibrating apart from feedback (mostly - he does giggle them o...

In the past I've taken older acoustics, usually w/ no truss rod, to my luthier that have a slight curvature to the neck, he always says the same thing; "It's old enough that everything's settled in & probably isn't going to move anymore. I would recommend planing down the fretboard." Think, resettin...

I've only bought a few things off of the harmony central board, but they've been pleasant experiences. Not bad deals either.

OBJECTIVE opinion on Trident s100 (not its maker)

I've got a chance to trade some gear I'm not using for a trident s100. Now, I've been able to find great huge gobs of information about Toft/Oram/Trident disputes/personalities/etc. What I haven't been able to find are opinions from people who have ACTUALLY USED THE BOARD , likes/dislikes, how does ...

What weatherbox said, blend 'em. I do it all the time. Try to position the sm7 (a great mic by the way) so you can get both the guitar & vocal at good levels & mix, & then use the sdc's as a spaced stereo pair. Place the sdc's by initially using the 3:1 ratio to minimize phase problems, but you'll p...

I've got an older ramsa wrs212 board. The pres, while I wouldn't call them flattering, I would call solid & beefy. Don't be afraid to use those & they'll probably sound better then the ones on that mackie. It's also a very good mixer, although I wish it had more routing options. I don't know how rel...

Well, normally, the power you get from an invertor is cleaner then what comes out of a utility line; I seen them on oscilliscope. The utility line has lord know what sort of feedback from every customer that's hooked up. However, your own little independent renewable power grid is also suseptable to...

I just recently saw some pictures on the web of pm1000 strips & pm3000 strips. The 1000's looked like a pretty consistant depth, but the 3000 strips looked like the boards got deeper on the top end, almost to the full depth of the console. Like I said, these were pictures I saw on the web. Hope this...

Not meaning to flame or disrespect anyone, however, when it comes to running a studio on DC power: So how do I power my RNC which runs on 9v AC, or my Valley gear which runs on 12vAC? What about the pm1000 channel strips that need 48vdc? The Audix preamp that needs 24vdc? What about my EH gear that ...

Not to hijack this thread, but what about Beyer Dynamic M160's as overheads. They're great versitile mics, and not quite as expensive as the AKG 414's. They were used for Zeppelin's 'When the Levee Breaks', one of the most distinctive drum lines in rock & roll. Any opinions?

And check that 48V thingy. I used an old AKG phantom power unit for years that unbeknownst to me wasn't 48V. When I finally got those mics hooked up to a real 48V phantom power I couldn't believe the difference. Some of those older Shure & AKG phantom power units are 18 or 24 or whatever volts, & li...
