Re: Any Happy users? Cheap and Degraded Gear Post

another vote for the 3630 --- I don't understand why everyone hates this compressor so much.

Also, I LOVE the little DBX 163x half rack compressors. I don't know if people dis these or not, but they are way underrated IMO.

Re: Budgeting: Real Studio vs DAW

from way back in this thread: "good to get you guys thinking..." Jeff, who appointed you the "coach", to use your own term...? Like many here, I've recorded in big studios, run a small room for a few years, and made records in bedrooms on a DAW. Guess what, some of the best records I've made BY FAR ...

Re: prince rumours

I have... the prince story is worth the price of admission alone! I'm a big prince fan, but no doubt the guy is a total freak. His stuff is totally hit or miss, too. If you like to hear him play rock guitar, check out a slightly under the radar record called "chaos and disorder". ADAT demos that wer...

Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad

The 991's are cool too. Nice on some acoustic guitars and as drum overhead, too. Why get rid of them?

Re: An open letter to gear manufacturers from an end user.

bobbydj - you're right, I focused on a small part of Joel's original argument. But really, we're all talking about the same thing in the end. The fact that these companies are creating a market that doesn't really need to exist, except to sustain itself. If they can't sell enough great simple gear, ...

Re: Anyone ever tried this??

I'm surprised at how many of you feel that the doubling effect is "inferior" to playing something twice. I always just thought of it as another tool in the box. The robotic nature of the way it sounds is totally the appeal to me. I always saw it as a type of chorus effect, but with more icyness and ...

Re: Anyone ever tried this??

I'm going to disagree with those that are cautioning you against this method. Go for it! I've used it consistently for years and I never felt like there were phase issues making it counterproductive. (that's not to say that there are not phase issues happening...) I don't think it clutters up a mix ...

Re: An open letter to gear manufacturers from an end user.

A lot of what we are all annoyed with can be paraphrased like this: "We don't want cheap crappy stuff that's flashy, give us really well made stuff that is simple and sounds good and lasts...." Unfortunately in this day and age, that type of approach would equal three quarters of these companies bei...

Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad

adgallant - I didn't really notice/pay attention to the rear rejection of the 991 when I used it for the drum overheads. The session I did, I was playing the drums and engineering myself. There was noone else there, noone playing along. So there was no bleed from other instruments... I have only tes...

Re: the mxl 990 isn't that bad

hey everyone. This is my first post here... I thought i would spend it on my review of this mic. I bought the 990/991 pack at Guitar Center one day on a total impulse buy, and took it to the studio where I work. Immediately put both mics up against a U87, TLM 103, and a 414 TL II. (mackie preamps). ...
