Within your budget, I'd be seriously looking at Massey CT5 and L2007. http://www.masseyplugins.com/buy#plugins/ct4 http://www.masseyplugins.com/buy#plugins/l2007 For just a little more, I'd check out Waves CLA Classic Compressors. http://www.waves.com/bundles/cla-classic-compressors Bonus: None of t...

Re: Pro Tools 11, 11 native, 11 native HD, 11 HDX

Hmm. But you could still use the HDX cards I thought, and jus plug your non-avid interface into the cards. Oh, sure. Apogee, Lynx, and probably a few others have offered HD adapters for their stuff for a while now that let you plug straight into an HD/HDX card. I figure you could also get an HD MAD...

Re: Pro Tools 11, 11 native, 11 native HD, 11 HDX

Ok. Interesting. So what would my options be if I was running PT 11 without their hardware? Say if I found another suitcase of money and purchased a BURL Mothership (I can dream right?) and I'm using it. I'm not using any avid hardware. Is PT HD native or HDX not an option then since their hardware...

So I'm a bit at a loss when people are arguing about Native vs HDX online. I can't tell if its just the yacht owners justifying their yachts they never sail, or if they're actually tried and true sea dogs and that the latency they speak of is really that bad in Native??? I'm sure the latency improv...

Re: Pro Tools 11, 11 native, 11 native HD, 11 HDX

Ok. So if I, say, purchase the "student" version of PT11 (which is Native, correct?) and install it on the macbook, and then in a few months after I find that suitcase full of money and feel the need to upgrade to HD, its just an iLok License issue that gets me up to "This shit to play in LA, Homie...

Re: Pro Tools 11, 11 native, 11 native HD, 11 HDX

Forgot to answer this question: If I get basic protools 11 for my macbook, I want to be able to move up to HD someday, I think?? Is the software pretty much the same and the only thing that makes the features different involve the hardware? Yes, the software is identical. The extra features are acti...

I've been using non-HD Pro Tools for years, and it works fine for me. Since you are pretty far behind version-wise, I'll try to sum up what's new. When version 9 opened up the ability to use non-Avid interfaces, it really changed the game. Being able to use essentially whatever interface you want (o...

Reaper will do the job nicely. Having said that, don't be afraid to upgrade your OS. Apple makes it cheap and simple to upgrade. For a 2011 model, there's no really no reason not to upgrade to 10.8.4.

I agree that USB2 is a bad design decision. It would have made more sense to have a modular design. Buy the base unit, then choose a port module. USB 3, Firewire 800, or Thunderbolt, for example. Oh well, at least there's a MADI option. That's what kept me from selling mine after I couldn't get USB2...

There's a 60-page thread over at Gearslutz you should read if you have a couple days. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/product-alerts-older-than-2-months/780033-antelope-orion-32-multichannel-converter.html My own experiences have been mixed for sure. FS: Apogee Big Ben

Apogee Big Ben master clock, $700 + shipping. Studio use only, non-smoking room. I am the original owner. This has been the heartbeat of my studio for several years, improving the sound of every A/D-D/A converter I've used it with. Only reason I'm getting rid of it is because I just got an Antelope ...

Re: $2-3k 24 i/o PT Laptop Firewire Conversion Solution?

I've been considering buying a G5 tower for $500 or so, and then getting a Motu 24 i/o - which seems to be a pretty good options Maybe there are similar or better options with getting a cheap G5 tower? Personally, I wouldn't spend $500 on a computer that's at least six years old (the last G5s were ...

Re: $2-3k 24 i/o PT Laptop Firewire Conversion Solution?

I'd like to be able to convert A/D at a high sample rate and quality Important question - how high do you want to go with sample rates? If you're talking 48K, it's pretty easy to get 24 I/O over firewire to a laptop, and you could do it for way less than $2000. Just for example, you could pick up t...
