I can't think of a technical reason why you shouldn't do that, aside from maybe running out of processing power on your computer. I do this all the time when I'm making reference mixes for people -- though it's really a stretch to call putting an EQ and a limiter on the master fader "mastering" The ...

Tough to limit to two. There are some I would really miss.

EQ: Sonnox EQ, Waves SSL Channel (cheating a little with this one)

Comp: Massey CT4, Sonnox Limiter

FX: Massey TapeHead, Soundtoys EchoBoy

Verb: TL Space, McDSP Revolver

The more I think about Universal Audio's business model with the UAD stuff, the more it pisses me off. No doubt they have great sounding plugins. Some of the best in the business. But tying it to the damn card seems ridiculous, especially now, with native hardware being as powerful as it is. Even Av...

I cop for the obvious. Sound on Sound published this list already and Massey is nowhere on it. I do own many that are however: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb07/articles/desertisland.htm That list is over four years old (Feb 2007). I'm not saying that the plugins they recommend aren't good, but...

Since most people have been talking about Photoshop-style raster based apps, I thought I'd throw this one out there: VectorDesigner As the name implies, it's a vector based editor, more like Adobe Illustrator than Photoshop. IMHO, it's about as easy as these kinds of apps get. There's still a learni...

OK, a few things. 1. DETAILS, MAN. Do you call your mechanic and say "my car is broken, what do I do?" If you want some help, at a minimum you need to describe when the crashes are happening and what you are doing. You should also describe exactly what you mean by a crash. Is the application dying, ...

I have access to a great preamp (Universal Audio 610)

I would prefer to avoid the expense of pro-level converters.
Why bother using a great preamp if you're going to run it through crappy converters?

If you're the kind of person who keeps a computer for seven years, then get the most powerful computer you can afford. 12 cores might seem excessive in 2011, but probably not in 2018.

There are a few sites that post system guides every few months to reflect the latest hardware. They all publish systems in tiers to reflect different budgets (low end, midrange, high end). Here are the ones I know about: Ars Technica http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/guides/2011/03/ars-system-guide-mar...

As vxboogie mentioned, go check out groove3.com. There are some good ones on there. Buy the "All-Access Pass" for $30/month, and you get unlimited views of all the tutorials on the site. Well worth it. Cancel the monthly subscription when you've seen everything you want to.

Re: what sw are you running?

hmm, maybe it's because the one i use has only the 1.86 cpu? is yours faster? I have the 2.13 Ghz processor, but I've spent some time on the "slower" model as well. It ain't slow, in my opinion. how do you get yours to not go to sleep when closing the lid? It goes to sleep when I close the lid -- w...

Re: what sw are you running?

here's 1 data point, macbook air 13" is not noticeably faster than 5 year old dell inspiron, for web browsing, general use. As someone who actually owns a Macbook Air, I call BS on this. The Air is most definitely faster than a 5-year-old Inspiron. The SSD that's present in every new Macbook Air ma...

The blue boxes around the track names indicate that you have an external controller configured. It's how Pro Tools tells you which tracks are active for the controller. Setup menu -> Peripherals -> MIDI Controllers tab If you don't have any controllers, set the Type to None for all of them. If you d...
