Re: nader???

I wouldn't sweat Nader at all. He's said he is going to run his campaign as another front against Bush (unlike last time, which was directed at Gore primarily), and he's going to have a tremendous difficulty in getting on the ballot without the benefit of the Green Party's small but devoted apparatu...

Re: Great Pedals and Stomp Boxes

Speaking of Akai, their bass synth pedal worked wonders with a guitar, but I blew a speaker using the dropped octave effect on it.

Re: having to change band names suck

Having grown up around dozens of awful white guy funk bands, we used to love to make up absurd funk band names, of which I'll offer you the best:
Funkdick.
Not be confused with Dickfunk, though.

Re: anyone surf or skate?

Used to surf growing up in Virginia Beach, but now that I'm in New Hampshire I'll be damned if I'm gonna put on all that rubber and still freeze my ass off out there. Some guys will go out in the snow, it's crazy.

Re: So if you could remove one track from a song?

Well, I guess I'll erase that castinet solo I did this morning, then. And I thought I was being kitchy.

Re: What's the scene like in central Illinois?

Portsmouth is a cool town, and not far at all to Boston. I'm on the other side of the state, and came up for grad school. It's beautiful, but if you don't like cold weather (and I don't), it might not be the place for you. Not much of a music scene outside of Boston, though Manchester and Burlington...

Re: Great Pedals and Stomp Boxes

Vox used to make this chrome looking overdrive pedal that I loved. Also, an original (hell, even reissue) Marshall Guv'nor. Makes anything into a stack. Rotovibes are my favorite effects, and an original Digitech Whammy can't be beat.

So if you could remove one track from a song?

I was listening to Lennon's Mind Games today, and I heard a track I had up until now never really gave much of an ear to. There's a harpsichord - I think - playing 8th notes that is most apparent during the first few bars, and it is totally killing that song for me now. I can't listen to it without ...

Re: What's the scene like in central Illinois?

Yeah, I guess it's a big state...I'll be somewhere near the Normal/Bloomington area, but am interested in the region as a whole.

Tracking a slide guitar?

Any tips on tracking slide guitar? I'm using a tele through a small tube amp (Laney LC15 - sort of Vox AC15 like) and also an acoustic, and just wanted some stuff that sounds like Brian Paulson / Son Volt slide - not to dirty, but not lap steel clean either.
Any ideas, suggestions, warnings, etc?

Re: Mastering

I think it's fair to say that you get (roughly) what you pay for, but this does not mean that you can't get something positive out of cheaper plug-ins and/or hardware. Sure, your friend down the road might not get you the same results Bob Ludwig will, but having a different pair or ears that you tru...

Re: Guitar Players: Most Overrated Solo

Steve Vai is a living, breathing overrated guitar solo. So is Yngwie and every shredder who has ever played. Except the guy who played on the Beastie's No Sleep til Brooklyn.

Re: half rack compressor, what are my options ...

I think there's a Meek on ebay right now, and I'm sure you can find a used RNC for about what you'd pay for a new BlueMax.
