Sounds similar (in principle, if not sonically) to Andy Hong using an AKG C1000s on guitar cabs. If you need/want it to cut through the mix, I can see using it.

This is an oldie but goodie classic for beginners: http://www.mackie.com/pdf/archive/ms1202_om.pdf Lots of good intro stuff on how a basic board works. You can see how they suggest setting the gain staging and trim levels on the preamps and inputs. I used (and still have) a 1202 and had it initially...

For 4 track equipment from that era, you're going to hear a lot of hiss, especially if you're used to listening to digital. Even with the available noise reduction (Dolby, dbx). Even if you're not listening to the recorded tracks. It's just the nature of the equipment. No matter what the headphone a...

Jeff, If you don't need A/D/A conversion, maybe a ZED 428 could fit your needs.

OP: maybe the recipe you need is a clean board, but cool external DI boxes to add the character you want, without having to spring for a $1000/channel preamp.

Decrapifying a PC

Last night, I took PC Decrapifier ( http://pcdecrapifier.com ) for a spin, and it took out some really annoying programs and services off of my recording PC, especially some of the stuff HP preloaded on my machine. That's the best spring cleaning I've done in a while, but it only gets me more motiva...

Unless you're eating the circuit board, I don't think you should worry too much about the warning label. Calif Prop 65 warnings cover all sorts of substances, including aspirin, nicotine and "salted fish- Chinese Style" (I kid you not). http://oehha.ca.gov/prop65/prop65_list/Newlist.html And people ...

A cautionary tale from a hyped locally based band: With plenty to look forward to, the band members laughed at some of the more humbling experiences back when they first hit the road. ?We would hear stuff like, ?You use a Helicon?! I hate those things,? ? ?Yeah, and, ?Two drummers?! What the&#...

People seem to think that a single activity is supposed to cover all of the bases- emotional fulfillment, rent and/or mortgage payments, family and friends, etc. Although it is very possible to have a single activity do this (and there are some TapeOp posters here who are living proof), it is also v...

I think the digital medium goes beyond the tonal... it's the ability of distribution and manipulation that has had such a huge impact on music, positive and negative. Positive: sombody can post a recording to the entire planet, for practically no cost. Negative: musicians are more interested in dist...
