2 SM57's on a stereo bar has worked for me mid audience as has 2 AKG C3000's hanging of a stage bar pointing at the audience 6-8 feet apart. Every gig is a bit different depending on access/size/options/rules at the venue. I did some live recording for a short period. I miss it in many ways as it wa...

Noise level will depend on the quality of the amplifier, good amp designs do not create noise whether it is buzz or hiss. I like an amp and passive speaker arrangement myself, nothing wrong with actives but the biggest difference is in quality and expense of designs rather than active or passive in ...

Thing is those closing probably don't/never did own a high quality multi-track tape machine or got rid of them a long time back. Those who do own them are obviously providing a niche service which their business works upon, therefore they are not closing their doors. Cheers SafeandSound Mastering Ma...

You might well want a pick up on the instrument and also a clip mic on the instrument this way the sound will not change too much as it moves and also a little less spill. A blend of both is normally the way to go.

Whilst I operate a mastering studio I have one of these types of devices in place. On the floor pointing directly up at me. It is rarely of use in stereo 2 track mastering unless a client has requested mix down feedback as part of the service (if requested). However it does prove useful when doing s...

Just picked up a new compressor (vari mu design) for mastering duties, very pleased with the choice. Has a unique and pleasing colour which has been finding many a use over the last few days. Subtle valve/transformer warmth, a touch of deep bass boost and a smooth presence and touch of extra 3d for ...

I personally find opto a tad slow for my own purposes. They are often found with a tube circuit which can make it difficult defining whether it is "tube bloom" or the gain reduction or both in combination that creates the result. For mastering I have yet to find a truly good mastering opto. Joe Meek...
