That really means a lot coming from you. It's the best mix I've ever done. lol. I never know how I want it to sound. I appreciate your feedback.

I'd like to hear how you decided to use reverb for different instruments. There's a lot of depth in there. What I especially like is some of the instruments, like the flute-like organ at the end, have a slightly sharp tonality. In mono that "out of tune ness" creates space. I'd like to hear more. It...

It's an Akai DPS16 and I'm recording through a Hamptone preamp. The drum samples are homemade: kick, toms and cymbals are from a guy from Florida whom I met here. The violins, overdriven guitar and vocals are through a homemade ribbon. So, you see, without this BBS this recording wouldn't be the sam...

I was listening to that James Blake album, which sounds like a cross between Thomas Dybdahl's "Science" and Kanye's "808s."

Plus the most recent MGMT, which I still listen to every few days.

My taste is quotidian.

for all the stuff people say about learning your craft before getting gear.. sometimes you know your craft pretty well and your gear is holding you back. There's no way to tell this without taking that plunge. I bought that Hamptone and my bass suddenly sounded like I knew it should. You're going to...

There's something snaky about the bass tone that I really dig. I also like the song.

For millions of years before the relatively recent invention of recording, music WAS in fact just a part of the culture. Another means of communication. Before the internet, you could sell recordings because the recording medium had to be physical. Now it is not ... and the general public is back t...

I have probably $6k in recording gear and I've probably spent another $2k net on stuff I later sold, like cassette 4-tracks and a DAT. But then, what am I recording? Another $6k in instruments. I haven't lost any money on those that I bought and sold. But let's add another $2k for stuff I can't even...

New Mix fixed link

I've already played this for my dad (who's on his second Avalon). Most of my tracks, I only play them for him and a couple of other people. Since his suggestions -- aside from one, which would mean re-recording -- are simple and I can do them easily, I thought I'd see if anyone had any tips. If you ...

Maybe there's an eHow about how to get discount studio time, like they tell you how to get a big mac for one dollard (even though the final price you get is $2).

1. Ask for the day rate.
2. Ask the owner to prorate her day rate to an hourly rate
3. Profit

get the 441, and then an EV RE15, then you've got two of the best mics in the world, and they both work on toms.

Is this an option? 1. overdub drums 2. rerecord, over the drums, guitar and voice The drummer can loosen up and not have to be perfect and then you can "start over" with the rhythm section. You've wasted time up til now getting sounds, but moving forward you'll know that early takes are scratch. I d...

picking with some added enjoyment

Simple first position picking. I added a little special sauce here and there. Do you think I compressed it wrong? I used an Akai DPS16. A 441 on the headstock and a 414 in figure 8 peeking over the right shoulder. http://www.zshare.net/audio/84929644e8468074/ I'm currently between mixdown options. I...
