I've gotten a lot of good ideas here.

I consider if any instruments are relatively overplayed or underplayed. Once I've gotten a good balance of volume and tone I will try bringing up instrumets that are underplayed and pushing back any that are overplayed. This helps a mix be more durable.

I have used both the 441 (which is a dynamic) and the CM700 on vocals. The 441 has a soft flavor that's not in vogue (but sometimes perfect, and a great room mic) but the CM700 is pretty good on a lot of vocals when you're just throwing up your hands.

Rimsky-Korsakov's book on arranging is the classic. What's the difference, really between stacking tracks up on a score or on a multitrack machine. Also buy some Nelson Riddle scores and listen to him. With the possible exception of Phillip Glass you've now studied the greatest arrangers of all time.
