http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1216139 This link references a story I heard on NPR a few years ago (sadly, the audio doesn't seem to be online anymore). The gist was that out of all the audio storage methods ever devised, the Library of Congress archivists couldn't find one th...

regarding the original question Paris eq is a really nice plugin. It's vst so you need the vst-rtas thing. 4 band parametric. works nice for hi or low passing. sounds nice as an eq as long as you don't go crazy with it. low cpu usage. Don't have a link right now, but a search will turn it up. It's f...

just check a manual and yeah, "...the VU's respond to the average level of the signal not the peak. The LED's are driven by a separate circiut separate from the meter ampilfiers, so that they react much more quickly than the meters. They are set to turn on at 8dB above the 0VU..." So, the short answ...

recorder or mixer? if it's VU's on a mixer, as long as it sounds fine to you then, for me, it is fine. If it's the recorder - well ultimately you want a strong enough signal to deal floor noise and make use of your tape width / bit depth (or whatever it is with 'putas). So yeah, possibly more of an ...

I used a U47 longbody tube mic directly into my TASCAM 464 that's so wonderfully out of kilter. i love things like that. I agree regarding getting more out of the 1/4" 8 track. It will never sound like 2" blah blah gold plated ultra tape of the Gods, but it can be a really great format and the micr...

I guess you have to determine what you find objectionable about it. In my experience (recording performers), the people who constantly correct their performances, or wish to have them corrected are hacks. They are not fully committed to their art. Not that there is anything wrong with being a hack....
