I think Eric Valentine did that first record. He's the guy who did Smash Mouth and Good Charlotte. His specialty is making bands like these sound almost listenable. He is seriously hands on. He's pretty dang amazing at it too. I actually gave the 3EB bass player Arion a couple lessons and produced h...

I shouldn't even post, but I can't help it. It's just so easy to hate this band. Disliking their shit music is as involuntary as breathing.

I remember for awhile Booker T was playing a DX7 on the B3 setting. Darn shame. Glad he figured it out.

I have to say the UAD-2 card is a game changer for recording for me. It's scary what that card can do and the stuff that UA is planning to do with it. Full disclosure: I produced the song on the product demo video trailer with matt boudreau who engineered. It was my first time seeing the card in ac...

Someone please derail this thread towards a "pro tools sucks" or "PC vs Mac" direction.
I'm begging.

I'm happy to report that I don't know what a Coldplay record sounds like. That said, M. Brauer is awesome. I think he likes to have a few squashed busses and a clean buss and then sends things around however he feels. Seems to work pretty good for him. Maybe try setting up a few busses with differen...

In my opinion, Mixing is 80% confidence. Pursuing a vision for the song is absolutely crucial. The vision informs the rest of the moves made. If you could not picture what a birdhouse looked like in your mind, you would have a really hard time building one when asked to do so, regardless of the too...

Giving a band that flavor of the decade sound replaced, drum parallel squashed, whiny autotuned harmony layered, breaths louder than the singing sound is easy business for me. I'd be so happy to have someone ask me to get a drum sound like "hello, goodbye" or the bass sound on "little help". That is...

The Smart Electronix free compressor is one of the best crunchy compressors I've come across. I may be crazy but I love the old L1 limiter on guitars and vocals. Just don't put a mix through it. Waves API eq's and the SSL channel strip. I also love PSP's masterQ. Audio damage Dubstation and PSP 42 a...

I think my next record will have a liner note along the lines of "unapologetically recorded using ProTools, Acid and Garageband." How about "unapologetically recorded using ProTools on acid in my garage with my band"? that's so 2003. Actually, the one we did in 2003 was Acid, Vegas, a Tascam DAT ma...

Probably 50% of the time I record drums, I use a 24" shallow drum with full coated ambassador heads in front of the normal kick drum to add some depth. You can get a dry punchy sound from the first kick and a huge resonating boom from the outside one. Works great for me.

Just recently someone actually said to me "we figured you'd want to use your drum samples and reamp through your amps anyway, so we didn't bother taking much time to get sounds". Fun for all. Wow! Really? That's crazy. That's better than the guys a few weeks ago who were asking me, "So, how do you ...

This seems to be a new trend in record making. Track the whole thing with no help and no gear, then hire a mixer to hopefully transform it into something listenable later. I usually curse my way through them. Muttering "you dirty c**t" toward the computer screen while mixing is my old standby. Just ...

I can hear again! It was worth the $700 for sure.
Took some serious pills and drops to kill it.
I really started to feel like my ears were permanently ruined after a month of this. What a relief.
Take care of your ears folks.
