Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.

Tchad Blake has a very sophisticated low/middle mix perception. He thrived with the rack Sansamp unit in the early 90's. That 'punch' knob was killer for snare drums. Mitchell Froom pushed him into new sonic territory. The genius of 'Bone Machine' lies more in the tracking of ambient spaces- listen ...

If Karl at Coast doesn't hook you up, check out Pacific Radio (both Hollywood and Valley locations) and also Electronic City in Burbank.

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.

'Who's Next' is the best performance I've ever heard captured. The band vibe on that disc is bar none, the greatest. Sonically, Glyn Johns is a master. Classic band production. The Gold Remaster on MCA is worth the purchase. In that era- so much of the sound of those discs was the console and 16-tra...

Re: your song on the radio

I worked high school, college and commercial radio- all succeeded with gut level programming. I agree non-commercial and college radio have a much more broad musical pallette. Strange thing was how the concept of 'Low Power FM' was squelched shortly after the Telecom Act of 1996 was passed. LPFM wou...

your song on the radio

This will be my only soapbox moment here. If you don't know this by now, every song you hear on the radio is a paid advertisement with no public disclosure about that fact. That makes those songs getting played with a method we know as payola- which is illegal. Corporate radio has exclusive contract...

Re: Stereo Buss Compression

Ditto on the SSL Quad compressor! What an absolutely musical device. Alot more so than the Alan Smart knockoff. A real time saver too for indie records. I miss the 10:1 setting ont the J-Series boards though. Don't know why they went to 20:1 on that.

Re: 1:1 compression why?

Actually, between 1:1 and 1.5:1 is really cool. Just crush whatever you put into it. Use it for containment when you have a really active, uptempo song where articulation can make the groove feel sluggish.

Re: soundcard recommendations

For that amount of money, sounds like you'd be a 'Soundblaster' candidate. I wouldn't recommend them though. Save and get the Aardvark Q10 for around $799. Well worth it. One of the smartest units out there. Visit their website www.aardvarkaudio.com for more information.

Re: Mixing to a computer

Nice thing about taking mixes into a computer is the ability to edit and burn directly from there. You no longer need that standalone unit you had. The Digi001 is a brilliant little unit. The only 'all in' (soundcard, in/out box & software) device on the market. Getting socialized into the Pro Tools...

Re: Strangest Studio Techniques U Ever Used?

During the making of Fluorescein's "High Contrast Comedown" we ventured into 'Sound on Sound' territory with a Studer A-827 24-track. We carefully taped multiple layers of Kim Wipes over the erase head so that the head was no longer providing strong enough current to erase the tape prior to being re...

Re: Tube Mic Reccomendations?

The Groove Tube GT66 is a decent affordable tube mic for around $399. Certainly has that new 12AX7 sound that so many pieces under $1000 have. For an ultimate recording mic with great top end clarity, consider picking up a used East German Neumann CMV563 with M7, M8S and M55K capsules. The M7 is a r...
